Catholic Education Week

At St David’s, Jesus Christ is at the centre of all that we do and is represented in our value of Faith.

In our school learning is shaped using Gospel values. Prayer, worship and religious celebrations are integral to the life of the school. As a Catholic school, we promote social justice and serve our community.

Our  vision, values and aims are to educate the whole person- body, mind and soul. These were developed in partnership with parents and parishes, and designed to nurture our whole community.

Primary 3/4 have been sharing what Catholic Education Week has meant to them and how they will put their faith into action in their own lives

Outdoor Learning

***If you do not have a waterproof outer layer for your child, please contact the school office and we will issue this to your child for use in school. These are available in all sizes***

Over the last few years at St David’s Primary School, we have been working hard to develop the skills of our staff and our pupils to develop Outdoor Learning as part of our curriculum.

Our pupils and staff love the great outdoors and you will never hear us saying “We can’t do anything outside because of the rain” – we embrace every opportunity that the weather throws at us!

Outdoor learning is a central part of the Learning for Sustainability
element of Curriculum for Excellence, which aims to build qualities that promote a sustainable and equitable Scottish society. Outdoor learning is a core part of the school curriculum, and provides all pupils with daily opportunities for learning and playing in nature all year round. The results suggest that the benefits of outdoor learning will endure throughout children’s primary school education.

The outdoors setting with its natural richness promotes better task performance, and significantly impacts on memory, motivation, attention and positive interdependence.

To ensure your child’s comfort, we ask that your child comes to school appropriately dressed for the weather every day. We recommend layers of clothing as a good way of achieving this.

In the autumn/winter, pupils can wear a base layer under their uniform to help them keep warm. They should also have an outer waterproof layer for those days when it is raining.  Shoes should be sturdy and waterproof but allow the flexibility of participating in sport too.

In the summer, lighter layers are recommended as well as hats, sunglasses etc for sun protection.

No matter which season, we ask that pupils bring a coat/jacket of some kind to school everyday.

Getting Ready for August

Be as prepared as you can be for August 2020 and find out if you could benefit from some of these supports on offer:

School Age Payment

The School Age Payment is part of Best Start Grant, a package of three payments that will give extra money to low income families during the early years of a child’s life. It is a £250 payment made around the time a child normally starts Primary 1 to help with the costs of a child starting school. The money can be used for anything from school uniform and shoes to a school bag, books or days out.

Applications open on 1 June 2020 and will remain open until 28 February 2021. Parents who have deferred entry to August 2021 should still apply in the 1 June 2020 to 28 February window. If they wait until after then it will be too late and they will miss out on their payment. Applications will be taken via the freephone helpline on 0800 182 2222, by post or online at mygov.scot/best-start-grant.

Free School Meals

Free School Meals give your child one free meal on every day that they are at school. All children in Primary 1- Primary 3 all receive a free school meal as part of Scottish Government policy. If your child, or the child you care for, is in Primary 4 or above, you can apply online for free school meals. Please note that you can apply for Free School Meals at any time in the school year. Free School Meal applications received now are only paid from the date the application is processed. The payment is not backdated. Primary One Home Learning Tasks 17th June 2020

Hi Primary One,

I was super impressed with all your work yesterday! The drawings of animals were AMAZING! Well Done!

I look forward to seeing what you send me on Seesaw today!

We are continuing with our preparation for our virtual zoo trip!

The first task today is to research about your favourite animal and tell me one fact about them?

What did you use to research?

You can either write your fact down or send me a video via seesaw! 🙂

When we are at the zoo we have to go and watch the penguin parade! It is one of Miss McAtear’s favourite things to do at the zoo! It’s a bit smelly though!

You can watch the penguin parade here.

One of the penguins has been a bit silly and has gotten lost from his rookery, which is what a group of penguins are called. Can you help guide him back to the group?

Can you use directions such as forward, backwards, right, left and turn?

Today’s last task is a bit of drama!

Can you think of all the animals at the zoo and send Miss McAtear a video on seesaw of you acting like the animal?

How does the animal move?

What noises do they make?

If your interested you can watch the penguins on the penguin cam!

https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/penguin-cam/#penguincam

I hope you enjoy today’s tasks.

Lots of Love,

Miss McAtear
