Outdoor Learning

***If you do not have a waterproof outer layer for your child, please contact the school office and we will issue this to your child for use in school. These are available in all sizes***

Over the last few years at St David’s Primary School, we have been working hard to develop the skills of our staff and our pupils to develop Outdoor Learning as part of our curriculum.

Our pupils and staff love the great outdoors and you will never hear us saying “We can’t do anything outside because of the rain” – we embrace every opportunity that the weather throws at us!

Outdoor learning is a central part of the Learning for Sustainability
element of Curriculum for Excellence, which aims to build qualities that promote a sustainable and equitable Scottish society. Outdoor learning is a core part of the school curriculum, and provides all pupils with daily opportunities for learning and playing in nature all year round. The results suggest that the benefits of outdoor learning will endure throughout children’s primary school education.

The outdoors setting with its natural richness promotes better task performance, and significantly impacts on memory, motivation, attention and positive interdependence.

To ensure your child’s comfort, we ask that your child comes to school appropriately dressed for the weather every day. We recommend layers of clothing as a good way of achieving this.

In the autumn/winter, pupils can wear a base layer under their uniform to help them keep warm. They should also have an outer waterproof layer for those days when it is raining.  Shoes should be sturdy and waterproof but allow the flexibility of participating in sport too.

In the summer, lighter layers are recommended as well as hats, sunglasses etc for sun protection.

No matter which season, we ask that pupils bring a coat/jacket of some kind to school everyday.
