What will I be learning in P5

Our teacher is Miss Hanley

Language
Language is about communicating. We will enjoy reading novels, information texts and poetry and use these as a basis for discussion and prediction, considering intentions and feelings. We will be taught reading skills during focussed reading sessions and will look in detail at novels and how to carry out effective research through taking relevant notes. We will learn to read aloud using expression and fluency through reading and assessing our classmates. We will write in a variety of genres producing leaflets, posters, scripts and personal projects along withpersuasive articles using specialist vocabulary. We will learn to speak confidently in a variety of situations from assembly presentations, class debates and reading to the nursery children, taking time to consider our audience, the purpose, pace and tone. We will learn to develop our listening skills whilst listening to visiting speakers and through video clips. We will develop our ability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources of information, particularly on the internet.

Mathematics
There’s a lot to maths: shape, position and movement, number, money & measurement, and information handling. As a class we will be considering the relevance of place value, will work with money, look at angles, fractions, time and shape. We will ensure that we are confident with the processes of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We will also investigate length, weight and area. We will investigate maths in the world and enterprise e.g. by running a Healthy Tuck Shop. There will also be lots of opportunities to participate in active maths to develop problem solving skills and improve our mental maths.
