Reading Challenge

Choose a book to read  and pick one of the activities below:

 

  • Draw a picture of a character from the book.
    Write three words to describe that character.

  • When you have finished reading your chosen
    story, imagine that you could be one of the
    characters. Who would you be? What would you do?

  • Choose a picture in the book.
    Write a list of the characters that
    you can see in the picture.

  • Describe to someone how one of the characters is feeling?

Science – Animal Groups

Today for Science we are going to learn more about different animal classes or groups. No, animal classes are not like the classes people have at school!

An animal class (or group) is made up of animals that are all alike in important ways.  Scientists have grouped animals into classes to make it easier to study them.

There are many different animal classes and every animal in the world belongs to one of them.  The five most well known classes of vertebrates (animals with backbones) are:

TASK: 

  1. Choose an animal group and make a poster highlighting key important information and features of your chosen animal group. Remember you need a clear title, pictures and facts! Here are some examples below to help you.

2. When you are finished why not sort out any animal toys you have into animal classes

3. Choose an animal from an animal group that you want to find out more about. Draw and write a fact about your chosen animal. Make a fact book about your chosen animals!

SPLAT

Splat is a fun game we play in class. You can play at home too and can use it for reading, spelling or Maths!

On a big pience of paper or on little bits of paper, write down some tricky words (was, all, because, they etc.). Then spread them out and one person has to tell the other person to find a word e.g. ‘ Find the word because’ and you use your hand or a spatula to splat the word ‘because’. It’s so simple but fun! You can even do it with numbers, odd and even numbers, addition and subtraction sums e.g. ‘Find the total of 4 and 6’ (would splat 10).

Give it a go and play some Splat. You can also find an interactive number splat grid to 100 online too. We also use this in class.

Story Setting Task

Good morning Primary 2. I hope you had a good day yesterday. Today we are going to look at story setting. Before school was closed, we were learning about story setting and how some authors use a story setting to start a story.

Remember a story setting is where the story takes place.

Challenge 1: Look at the pictures below and think of some adjectives to describe them (Remember think about your senses. What do you see? If you stepped into the picture, what could you hear, feel?)

Challenge 2: Pick one of the pictures and draw it in your jotter. Can you write a story setting description using lots of adjectives. Remember to write in sentences using full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. Here are some sentence starters to help you:

Once up on a time in a ________ land there was a _________.

It was _______ and _______.

There were ____________ 

It felt ___________.

Adjectives to help you: tiny, huge, massive, dry, dusty, magical, enchanted, old, rough, dirty, shiny, rusty, cute, sparkling, clear, golden, beautiful, fun, busy, quiet, loud, howling, creepy, creaky, dark, bright, sunny.

Challenge 3: Read your story setting description out to someone. Now can you come up with a character who lives in your story setting. Draw them and make up a name for them.
