Literacy – Writing

Find your story planner that you did yesterday. It will look something like this.

You used this to decide on your setting character and problem.

In your home learning jotter. Write sentences for each section.

  • Describe about where the story took place
  •  Describe the character in the story. Include what they look like and what kind of person are they.
  • Explain the main problem
  • How did the character take to solve the problem?
  • How does you story end?

Remember when you are writing you need to remember how to write a superhero sentence. If you are stuck on how to spell a word try and sound it out, say it slowly so you can hear the letters in the word.

Enjoy writing your story.

Science

Storm in a Glass

We tried this experiment in class. Can you remember? Have a go doing this experiment at home.

Storm_in_a_Glass_Scientist_Joe_Experiment_of_the_Month

Materials

  • Shaving cream
  • A large glass
  • water
  • Food coloring
  • A spoon

Instructions:

  1. Fill the glass 1/2 full with water
  2. Spray some shaving cream on top of the water to fill the glass to ¾ full.
  3. Use your finger or a spoon to spread the shaving cream evenly over the top of the water. The top of the shaving cream should be flat.
  4. Mix ½-cup water with 10 drops of food coloring in a separate container. Gently add the colored water, spoonful by spoonful, to the top of the shaving cream. When it gets too heavy, watch it storm!

Watch Scientist Joe conduct the experiment here!

How does it work?

Clouds in the sky hold onto water. They can hold millions of gallons! The layer of shaving cream is our pretend cloud in this experiment. The shaving cream layer can also hold onto water. Clouds can’t keep storing more and more water forever, eventually they get too heavy. When that happens, the water falls out (precipitates) as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

Further Experiments

  • Try more water and less shaving cream, or less water and more shaving cream. Which one looks more like a drizzle, and which one looks like a downpour?

Fun Card Game

This is a great game to play with two people. There are lots of versions – you could even create your own rules!

All you need is a pack of playing cards!

If you don’t have playing cards make your own!

Cut out 40 small pieces of card or paper with the numbers 1 to 10 written four times! Sorted!

Have fun! Click the link below to find out how to play!

Maths

Last week we looked at multiplication. Remember ‘multiply’ and ‘times’ mean adding the same number again and again or ‘groups of’ a certain number. For example, 3 x 2 or 3 twos means that we add 2 three times,  2 + 2 +2 or  we add 3 groups of 2 like this,  **    +  **    +    **

Did you know that when you count in 2s, 5s and 10s you are reciting the 2, 5 and 10 times tables!

Here is the two times table. The answers are even and are going up in twos

Use the 100 splat square to count in 2s and 5s.

https://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html

Lunch Time! Remember to wash your hands.

PAThS

Twiggle wants you to know that he misses you all very much! He said he did the Turtle when he was upset last week because he wanted to see his friends but he couldn’t. Remember when you are feeling upset, worried or angry to

  1. Stop
  2. Breath
  3. Say what the problem is

I know it has been a long time since you have all been at school and you are missing your friends so much! Why don’t you write a letter to your friend or teacher? Or you could leave a comment. When you come back you will be big boys and girls in P3! Why don’t you write down or draw some of your favourite things you like to do at school or write down 3 things you want to learn about in P3 and keep it safe. When you come back to school in August you can show it to your friends and teacher!

Multiplication and Addition
Multiplication is when you take one number and add it together a number of times.

Example:

5 multiplied by 4 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

watch Miss Rai explain here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR8GpsMC29U

We took the number 5 and added it together 4 times. This is why multiplication is sometimes called “times”. You might see x in a sum. That means times or multiplied. Have a go at these sums. Use drawings, playdoh, buttons, pasta or other objects to put into groups to help you count and add.

a) 1+1+1+1+1=                       b) 2+2+2+2=

c) 4+4+4=                              d) 5+5+5+5+5

e) 3+3=                                    f) 6+6+6=

g) 10+10+10+10+10+10

i) 0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0=

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is held every year on 8th June to raise awareness of the vital importance of our oceans and the role they play in sustaining a healthy planet. A global celebration, it looks to bring people and organisations together across the globe in a series of events highlighting how we can all help protect and converse the oceans.

We learnt about sea pollution at the start of Primary 2 during our seaside and sea creature topic. Thinking about plastic, what things can you do at home to help? Can you design a poster to show the importance of looking after our oceans? You can use any materials you want. Remember to make it clear and bold to get your message across to others.

PAThS

Today in Paths we are going to go over kindness and respect. What does being kind mean? What does it look like, can you give examples? What do you think respect means?

Respect is when you treat someone fairly and make them feel cared for and important. Remember it doesn’t matter what someone looks like, how they talk or where they are from, every person is important and should be respected. You are important too and also should be respected! If more people respect each other then the world will be a kinder place. Think of  and name all the people you show respect to.
