P5S – The River Clyde Home Team Challenge

Image result for the river clyde

This term our main topic will be the River Clyde which we will learn about along side our Clyde in the Classroom topic.  I am really looking forward to combining these two topics this term. We have lots to learn!

Today we formed our new topic groups using our Talking Chips cards. We then shared our combined knowledge on these topics and what we would like to to learn using our KWL grid.

Our next task was to complete our Home Team Challenge by choosing a group name and design to go with it. I have to say, we have some very interesting group name choices this term! The skills and qualities you will bring to your new group were also shared.

Here are a few photographs from this today’s session.

P1H Welcome Back!

Happy New Year and welcome back.  It was lovely to see everyone today and hear all the news about Christmas and New Year.  A few wee reminders about what is happening.

There is no homework this week.  Book bags will go out on Monday with new reading books.  Not everyone will have a word wall so please do not panic if your child does not have one!

Please return gym bags tomorrow if you have not already done so.  Our PE days remain a Thursday and Friday.

Please could you practise zipping or fastening jackets with your child?  During this cold weather it is essential that they are suitably wrapped up when going out to play during playtime, lunchtime or during the daily mile.

Our topic for the next few weeks will be Scotland and we will be learning Scottish Country Dances and poems-watch this space for more information!

Read and Munch will continue to be on a Thursday starting next week.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Mrs Hunter

Happy New Year

Welcome back everyone.  Happy New Year.

It was lovely to see you all back today and hear your Christmas and New Year news.

We started our new topic – Scotland. We used our atlas to look at different maps and found Scotland. We learned that its part of the United Kingdom.  We made saltires and lion rampant flags.

P7M Robert Burns Team Task

This morning we completed the first part of our Robert Burns topic. We had to work together to display Robert Burns’ name on the classroom floor. The only resources we had were ourselves! The time limit was 20 minutes.

Learning Outcome

By investigating a Scottish historical theme, I can discover how past events or the actions of individuals or groups have shaped Scottish society.  SOC 2-03a

The higher order thinking skill was synthesis: I can work successfully with others using organisational tools to complete a task in a given time.

After Lucy and Morgan took turns to read out the task sheet, you jumped up and started moving the tables to create a space on the floor.  It was so hard for me to stand back and watch you without answering questions or giving suggestions but there was a lesson to be learned! Here is what I saw and heard during the twenty minutes. Which ones are positives and which ones can you learn lessons from?

see-hear

After 20 minutes, the task was over and we had a good debrief to discuss what went well (W.W.W) and what would could have been done better (E.B.I). Here is your self assessment:

We compared your own self-assessment with my assessment and highlighted what we could use to improve any future tasks. Here you are in action.

I had a quick look at  your reading passports and I am very impressed at how much most of you read last term. As Mrs. O’Neill and I are keen to keep this enthusiasm going, both classes will be completing another challenge this term. The criteria have changed slightly, I will let you know all about it in class tomorrow.

  1.  P.E. will start on Tuesday of next week and our days remain the same. Please ensure you have a full change of kit for both these sessions: top, shorts and trainers. Girls, please ensure you have socks to change into if you are wearing tights.
  2. Our lunch menu will be week 4. Please remember there is a change to this as chicken pie will be served instead of steak pie.

See you all in the morning.

P7 Burns Poetry Recital

robert-burns1

You need to choose one of Robert Burns’ poems to practise and recite for our annual school competition on Friday 27th January. You must rehearse your poem and be prepare  to recite to our class and one other class by Monday 23rd January. You must let me know your chosen poem by Friday 13th. Please use the weblinks below to help you find a suitable poem. The poem should be challenging but manageable. As you are P7, you are expected to choose a poem with a minimum of 4 verses (16 lines).

Poem Hunter – Robert Burns

Scottish Poetry Library

BBC – Burns Poems (has some audio links to allow you to hear the correct pronunciation)

As usual there will be one winner chosen from each class after reciting your poem to our own class then another class within the school.

The following are the points you will be judged on:

  • Good, clear diction.
  • Pace
  • A good understanding of the poem.
  • Correct pronunciation of Scottish words.
  • Good facial and vocal expression conveying the sentiment of the poem.
  • Variation in pace and tone.
  • A moderate amount of appropriate gesture if it comes naturally and if it enhances the poem.
  • Over-dramatisation should be avoided as this distracts the audience and detracts from the flow of words.

You must recite your poem in verse, not singing.

We are also looking for anyone who can play Scottish music, sing a Scottish song or can perform a Scottish dance. Please let Mrs Davidson know if you are able to perform at the Burns Assembly.

Christmas Jumper Day Update

On Friday we held our annual Christmas Jumper Day to help raise money for the Save the Children organisation.  Everyone wore their Christmas jumpers or t-shirts to school …… and what a wonderful selection we had!

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated on Friday. As a school we raised the fabulous total of £419.12. We were then able to increase this total after we received a “Charity Match” donation from Renfrewshire Council. This meant the final total raised was a staggering …….. £618.12.

Here are a few class photographs taken by the pupils of P5S. We don’t have any of the infants as they were busy partying and having a visit from a certain someone in a red suit.
