P5 – Scottish Country Dancing

Image result for scotland flag

As part of our Scotland topic this month we will be participating in  some Scottish Country Dancing. This morning we had a few grumbles from some of you (in both classes) who weren’t particularly keen to take part. However once our session was over this afternoon many of you told us just how much you enjoyed it. We had lots of “fists of fives” being shown! Plus, we had lots and lots of smiling going on. The photographs don’t lie!

Today we were focusing on two dances: the Gay Gordons and the Canadian Barn Dance. We had a wee taster of the Gay Gordons during term 1 and I am delighted at just how many of you remembered the steps. You have well and truly mastered this dance.  Well done!

In our Canadian Barn Dance we moved it up a notch and moved partners once we had mastered the basic steps. Once again, a huge well done as you managed this very well. Next week we will move onto some of the group dances – be ready!

Here are a few action shots for you to look at.

P7 Burns Supper Challenge – Session 2

This afternoon we were so impressed with the collaboration and creativity that went on! You worked in your own groups (Food and Drink, Entertainment, Administration or Decorations), to come up with ideas of how to plan and organise the Burns Supper. There were ideas and opinions shared while most people were listening and on task. There were very minimal squabbles while the sub-facilitators and facilitators worked hard to ensure everyone had a job and was on task. Your ‘to do’ lists are huge but we know if you work as well as you did this afternoon, it’s going to be an amazing afternoon! Have a look to see who was on task.

P4 Scottish Poems

Hi there, as you know this month is our Scottish Culture month.  As part of this each child is asked to select and learn a Scottish/Burns poem which they will then recite to the class.

From this, a child from each class will be selected to represent their class at our Burns assembly.

When learning the poem remind your child to focus on –

  • Good, clear diction
  • Pace
  • A good understanding of the poem
  • Correct pronunciation of Scottish words
  • Good facial and vocal expressions conveying the sentiment of the poem
  • Variation in pace and tone

Here are some links to some poems you may wish to choose. We will discuss each of these in class this week.

P5S – Robert Burns – The Life of …..

Image result for robert burns

Today we were researching the life of Robert Burns as part of our mini Scotland topic. Groups members researched different aspects of Burns’ life and recorded some very good information. This information was then shared with everyone in the group. Can you tell someone at home something you learned today?

Using your notes, you were then to think out of the box a little and create a poster showing all of your newfound knowledge on Robert Burns. We have some very interesting pieces being created. I look forward to showing them off once completed.

Here you all are hard at work, both in the ICT Suite and back in class.

P5S – Yoga Taster Session

Image result for yoga

On Friday you were introduced to the wonders of yoga. Yoga enhances physical flexibility, builds on your balance and coordination and also develops your focus and concentration. Over the next few weeks you will be learning about the different moves used in yoga in more detail. This will hopefully allow you to develop and build on all of these areas.

Here are a few photographs from our first taster session.

Happy New Year!

Hi everyone

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Just wanted to start by saying a huge thank you for all of my lovely gifts and cards, it was very much appreciated!

We are now back into normal routine and I am looking forward to watching the children progress in their learning throughout the term.

Thank you for returning gym bags but we are still waiting for a few children to return these to school. Can I please remind you that our gym days are on a Wednesday and Friday.

We have started our new mini topic, Scotland and all children are allowed to bring in anything Scottish related to class to share with their friends.

The children have been desperate to share their class teddy, Star with you at home. All children will therefore have the opportunity over the next few weeks to take Star home for a sleepover. Some children have asked  if they can write a diary or take pictures with Star to share the next day in class. I am allowing this but I must make clear is not a requirement. I am allowing Star to go home for enjoyment purposes.

HOMEWORK w/b 9.1.17

All children should choose one poem from the sheet to learn and be ready to recite to the class on Monday 25th January. More details have been posted on a previous post.

Homework in P2H this week will include:
-Spelling revision of the sounds ‘ff’, ‘ll’, ‘ss/zz’

-A non-fiction reading book
This will be our last non-fiction book of the term. We will complete a check-up at the end of the week which will include finding information using the index and contents pages, and also noting down page numbers when facts have been located.

-Children who have a common word wall in their book bags can practice their words throughout the week.

-The class will take home three Roberts Burns poems tomorrow and can choose one poem to learn by Monday the 23rd of January.

Could anyone who has not returned their gym bag bring it tomorrow please, as we will be starting our block of gymnastics in the morning.

Monday- The Seven Dwarfs
Tuesday- Jack and the Beanstalk
Wednesday- Pinocchio
Thursday- Peter Pan
Friday- Gingerbread Man

Anyone from The Seven Dwarfs group who did not show or tell today may bring something tomorrow.

P5S – Robert Burns/Scottish Poems

Image result for scotland flag

As part of our mini Scotland topic you should choose a poem to learn and recite to the class. You may be the lucky person who then represents our class at our annual Burns’ Assembly on Friday 27th January.

When presenting your poem you will be judged on the following:

  • Good, clear diction
  • Pace
  • A good understanding of the poem
  • Correct pronunciation of Scottish words
  • Good facial and vocal expression conveying the sentiment of the poem
  • Variation in pace and tone
  • A moderate amount of appropriate gesture if it comes naturally and if it enhances the poem
  • Over-dramatisation should be avoided as this distracts the audience and detracts from the flow of words

Please use the links below to see a selection of poems to choose from if you wish. As discussed, if you have another poem you wish to learn instead, please let me know. There is also a link for poems by Robert Burns if you wish to learn one of these. All poem choices should be made by Friday.

Good evening everyone! I hope you have had a great weekend. We have our first full week of term 3 ahead of us and it is going to be a very busy one.

Spelling: Units 23 and 30 should be completed this week. Our spelling will be changing slightly this term. I will go over these changes with you in class tomorrow.

You should continue to copy each word out three times in your spelling jotter. You should then write an uplevelled sentence (remembering to use interesting VCOP) for the six spelling rule words. This task should be completed by Friday.

Reading:  Please read chapters 3 and 4 of our class novel: The Borrowers. As discussed in class, there is no written homework to be completed for this as it will be done in class. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to participate in the class lesson. All reading should be completed for Thursday.

As discussed in class, if you come across any vocabulary that you are unsure of the definition, please use a dictionary to find this out. You may also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter (remember to take a note of the page number) and we can discuss it in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: This challenge will be ongoing for the whole term (12 weeks). You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Are you up for the challenge?

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class.

Maths: Please click the link below for your maths homework. This task should be completed in your maths homework jotter.  You should return this task by Friday. All jotters should now be covered.

However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Please remember to record the books in your reading passport, which is kept in class, when you start a new book and complete your review when you finish it.
