P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 13.3.17

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are having a lovely weekend after yet another busy week. Please continue reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete lists ear, eer, ere  or or  in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC in the same way as we do in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your first 6 spelling words. Once again I will be assessing your use of connectives, however I will also be looking for more fabulous vocabulary too as we have learned a number of new words through our novel study – Danny the Champion of the World.

Reading: We are coming to the end of our novel study – Danny the Champion of the World. Please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Your homework for this week is to  read the last two chapters, 21 and 22 for Tuesday 21st March.

As always if there are any words that you are unsure of please take a note of them in your Book Detectives jotter (remembering the page number) and, if possible, use a dictionary to find out their meaning . We will start our lesson by discussing these in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: You now only have 3 weeks to go with your personal reading challenge. You have all set yourself a target which you are aiming to reach (or beat!) by the end of the challenge. Please remember to record the books you have read in your Reading Passport which are kept in class. Remember to choose your books carefully to ensure they are at the correct level for you – not too easy or too hard.  You all chose a library book when we visited Bishopton Library on Tuesday, you can bring this into school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time and counts as part of your reading challenge.

Maths:  Mrs. O’Neill has posted another set of worded problems on your maths homework blog.  Please complete these in  your maths homework jotter. As always, please read each question carefully. You should ensure you are showing workings AND giving a full sentence answer. This homework is due for Thursday 16th March.

A high standard of work is being produced from the majority of you. Well done, keep it up!

Both group 1 and group 2 can find their maths homework here:

Here are your reminders for this week:

  2. If you have any spare plastic carrier bags at home please could you bring them in so that we can use them to stuff your 3D trout.
  3. Parents’ Night appointment times will be issued on Tuesday. Please ensure the confirmation slip is returned as soon as possible.
  4. Please remember if anyone at home is (or has been) linked to the River Clyde in any way through work, we would love to hear from them. Please click here for further information.
  5. All Pupil/Parent Response sheets should be returned to school by 24th March.

Good morning everyone! I hope you have all had a lovely weekend so far. It is that time again so please keep reading for a note of your homework and reminders for this week.

Spelling:  New spelling sheets will be issued this week. Units 1 and 30 should be completed for Friday. As always, each word should be written out three times and an uplevelled sentence should be written for each spelling rule word. Please remember to consider your VCOP in each sentence.

This week we will be focusing on using more ambitious connectives in each sentence: before, as well as, however, also, although and after. Try to include one in each sentence. This does not mean you forget about uplevelling your openers and vocabulary. We are trying to use all of these together to make your sentences wonderful.

Reading:  You have a new core reader to complete at home. Please complete the book for Thursday. There will be no written homework for this as all tasks will be completed in class. As always, if there is any vocabulary you are unsure of, please take a note of it and we will discuss it in class on Thursday.

Please remember to read aloud to someone at home. A feedback sheet will be issued tomorrow (Monday) for the person you read to to complete, if possible. This should be returned to school on Thursday.

Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 3 weeks of reading left. You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class. Remember this is your record of the number of books you have read so far this term.

Maths: Please complete the word problems for your group by Friday. As always, all workings should be shown and a sentence answer should be given for each question. Please use the links below to access your questions.

Please keep up the high standard of work.

P7M – Maths Homework – BIDMAS

BIDMAS – Cities of the World

Our new Maths topic is B.I.D.M.A.S. (also known as BODMAS). BIDMAS stands for Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. All of these terms are fairly obvious except for ‘Indices’, which are just powers (eg 23 or 42 etc.) So the order you should do your calculations in is: Brackets. Indices. Multiplication. Division. Addition. Subtraction. Click here to remind you how to work it out.

Use the table below and the rules of BIDMAS to work out the answers to the questions and unravel these famous cities of the world. Remember to show all working to show your understanding and to help you work through the BIDMAS process. See the example below to remind you how to work it out or visit Maths is Fun – BIDMAS.

Example City:

  1. 7 + 7 x 2 = 7 + 7 x 2 = 7 + 14 = 21      U
  2. 16 ÷ 22  – 3 = 16 ÷ 22  – 3 = 16 ÷ 4 – 3 = 4 – 3 = 1   A
  3. 17 – (2 + 14) = 17 – (2 + 12) = 17 – 14 = 3    C
  4. 46 – 4 x 11 = 46 – 4 x 11 = 46 – 44 = 2    B

UACB = Cuba

City 1

  1. 2 × 6 + 3
  2. 3 × 5 – 4
  3. 5 + 3 × 3
  4. 7 – 6 ÷ 3
  5. (2 + 4) × 3
  6. 7 + 4²
  7. 3² + 4²

City 2

  1. (9 + 7) ÷ 4
  2. 2 + 3 × 4
  3. (2 + 3)²
  4. (2 + 4 × 7) ÷ 6
  5. 3 + 4²
  6. 8 × 2 + 3 × 3

City 3

  1. (7 + 6) ÷ (17 – 4)
  2. 3 + 2 × 4
  3. 4² ÷ 2³
  4. 4 + 2 × 5
  5. 28 ÷ (9 – 5)
  6. (7 – 2) × (9 – 6)
  7. (2 × 22) ÷ 2²

City 4

  1. (6 × 4) ÷ √9
  2. 1 + 2³
  3. (1 + 8 × 3) ÷ (15 – 2 × 5)
  4. 4² ÷ 4
  5. (8 × 6) ÷ 2²

City 5

  1. 4 + 3 × 5
  2. 3 × 9 – 4
  3. (6 + 3 × 8) ÷ (11 – 3²)
  4. (11 + 4) ÷ (8 – 3)
  5. 1 + 7 × 2
  6. (4 × 7 – 2) ÷ (16 – 7 × 2)

Find the famous cities by reordering the letters that you’ve found.

Today and tomorrow

Well, we have had a great afternoon!  Yesterday we read Jack and the Beanstalk and when we arrived in class this morning, we found  Sparky sleeping inside the castle beside a beanstalk attached to a castle in the clouds.  He must have been up  very late last night making it.                                                                                                                        There were two bags of cotton wool beside him so we thought this was a clue that he wanted us to have a go at making our own. Everybody was up for the challenge. We have still to finish them tomorrow.  I think Sparky will be delighted with the results!

Since we have a library visit in the morning, there is no need to send in a book for read and munch as the children can use the library book that they choose. Can still send in a snack though.

P7 – Carrie’s War and Friend or Foe (Audiobooks)

If you are enjoying Goodnight Mister Tom, Radio 2 have two excellent audiobooks available on Podcast.

Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden is set during WW2. The story follows Carrie and her younger brother who are evacuated to Wales.

All 10 episodes can be found on the link below:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p041ybgj/episodes/player

Friend or Foe by Michael Murpugo, is the story of John and Mark who are evacuated from the Blitz in London.

All 8 episodes can be found on the link below:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p043gvrq/episodes/player

Pupil/parent response sheet

By now you should have received your child’s pupil/parent response sheet. It would be appreciated if you could take some time to talk about the sheet with your child and help them to complete it.

Children are free to draw pictures or write words. If you want, you can write the answers for your child.

Could all forms please be returned by Friday 24th March.

P5S – Science – The Water Cycle

Image result for water cycle

Today we became scientists when we looked at how the water cycle works. We learned some very technical words: evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Can you remember how each stage works? Can you remember how to pronounce the words? Please tell someone at home today what you were learning.

Here are your very own water cycle diagrams. Find your diagram and show it to someone at home.

P7M – Maths: 72 Learn Its

I am pleased to say that a few of you in the class have worked hard to achieve 72/72 in your Big Maths Beat That tests. Please read below and visit the websites to improve your speed and accuracy.

Learn Itsare addition facts and times tables facts. There are 72 Learns Its in total; 36 addition Learn Its and 36 multiplication Learn Its. These are facts that children need to learn off by heart, so when they are asked ‘What is 6+4 ?’ they are able to give the answer as quickly as they would be able to tell you their name. As soon as they know 3×5=15 they also know 5×3=15 (This is known as a ‘Switcher’).

Please work at home to make sure you really do know your Learn Its and your Switchers with INSTANT RECALL (no fingers!)

World Book Day

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day last week and loved coming into school dressed as book characters, in our jammies or onesies. P5S joined us for a special read and munch and P7S read fairytales to us before we worked with them to act out an alternative ending to a fairytale. Some of us were even lucky enough to have some family members come into school to read to us and our friends.

Here are some pictures from the day.

P7M – Basketball

This morning we had our last basketball session. You have all shown major improvement since session one. You have followed Kasia’s advice and instructions and are able to play very well.

We had discussions in between each game to talk about what we could learn from the mistakes the others had made. The main repeated errors were not passing the ball (being aware of who is open on the court) and line violations when throwing the ball in. Try to learn from your mistakes.

As I said at the end, you all have strengths in different areas of the curriculum but some of you allow others to dominate you. For example, those of you who are showing skills in basketball allowed the more vocal pupils to shout over you. Come on – let yourself shine!
