All children are reminded that bikes and scooters must be pushed in the playground to avoid accidents. Children must only cycle and scoot when with their class teacher. Although the paths around the school are outwith the school, it would be advisable to do the same. We would ask for support from parents etc. to ensure that everyone is safe.

Red Nose Day Bake Sale
The class will have the opportunity to visit our bake sale tomorrow, which will be hosted by Primary 6. We will be visiting at 11.45 and cakes will all be priced at 10p.
Engineering 17/3/17
On Friday, we were able to get the engines onto our cars! We also tested them with batteries and could hear them working! Now we only have to work on to design and our cars will be finished! We can’t wait!
1st Big Pedal winner
Well done to P3H who had the most people cycling and scooting today. They hold the magnificent Big Pedal trophy.

Who will win tomorrow?
It could be your class!
Hat Making
On Friday we made hats as part of our European Art Series. We learned about the French designer, Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel revolutionised women’s fashion and opened a hat shop as her very first venture. We used paper to make different types of hats which had to include either a buckle, a brim, a peak or edges and trimmings. It also had to stay on the head without falling off! We had great fun and some great designs were made! The next big fashion designer could be in P6G!
Good start to Eco Week
P1H This Week
Read and Munch will be on Friday this week.
We will be doing lots of extra active things this week so if children wish to wear polo shirts each day this week that is fine.
We had 16 bikes and scooters today-let’s try to get even more tomorrow! Remember your helmets!
We can earn extra Eco points this week for having a healthy snack for break and lunch. This could include fruit, vegetables, yogurts, fruit bars for example. Please try to avoid crisps and chocolate!
There will be a Bake Sale for Comic Relief tomorrow. Children can buy cakes starting at 10p.
Please remember to return your consent form for face painting if you have not already done so. No form means no face painting!
I have still to get Parent/Pupile response forms from quite a number of people. These forms should be handed in by Friday of this week as they will form the basis for discussion on parents’ nights.
Book bags will go home tomorrow as it is a no paper day today! As stated in previous posts, no reading books will go home this week. They will be read in class only.
I know there is a great deal of information to take in but it is a very busy, exciting week in school!

P7 – WW2 Topical News
Today is Dame Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday. She is known as the Forces’ Sweetheart because she sang so many songs to the troops during WW2 to keep their spirits up. Last night her image was projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover.
We are singing one of her most well-known songs in our show tomorrow night, ‘We’ll Meet Again’. Visit the link below to read more about her life.
P5S & P7M Eco Information Handling
This morning, you are going to work in pairs/trios to collect and display information about the amount and type of litter found in the playground. This is a Monday morning so the litter found in the playground is a mixture of what our pupils have dropped, what has been blown in and what people have dropped over the weekend.
In groups made up of P5 and P7 pupils, you will collect the data by surveying the Upper, Middle or Infant playgrounds. You will record the information using a tally table on whiteboards (it is No Paper Day after all), then you will transfer this to an bar/pie chart on Maths is Fun.
Please use the link below:
http://www.mathsisfun.com/data/bar-graph.html
Remember the features of a bar chart:
- title (including all of your names)
- X-axis label
- Y-axis label
- name the bars (categories)
- enter the values (amounts)
You may also take 3 photos of your group working , as well as the litter. Once you have completed the online bar/pie chart, please take a screen shot and AirDrop it and the 3 photos to the ‘Hut 1’ iPad.
Mrs O’Neill and I are looking for your pair/trio to:
- work and stay together
- including everyone
- taking turns
- contributing ideas
- manners – saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’
- staying on task being responsible.
Good luck and enjoy working together!

P1M Week 20.3.17
Lots happening this week – It’s Eco Week/Big Pedal and Red Nose Day on Friday. Several new posts have been added over the weekend (including photos of the Fairyland open afternoon) so check them all out. See diaries regarding homework. No reading books being sent home, however we will be doing reading in class. In the bookbags, you will find a face painting permission slip. If this could be attended to and returned tomorrow it would be much appreciated. As The Big Pedal is starting this week, we are encouraging the children to come to school on their scooters/ bikes. We have a daily slot timetabled for using the bikes and scooters in the playground. They can be left at the railings outside classroom door. Children need to be responsible for their own padlocks if being used.

Hi everyone
I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
Just wanted to say a massive thank you to all who attended our open afternoon on Friday. I hope you enjoyed seeing the children’s work and joining in with their activities.

Children are invited to bring in their bikes and scooters into school and we will have the opportunity to go out into the playground to play on them each day. Please note that children must wear a helmet when on their bikes and scooters.

On top of this, there are a variety of fundraising activities related to Red Nose Day throughout the week. On Tuesday, P6 are holding a bake sale where all cakes will cost 10p. There will be face painting on Wednesday for anyone who wishes to have their face painted. This will cost 20p but children must have returned their permission slip before they will be allowed to have this done! On Friday, there will be a wear red to school day where there is a suggested donation of £1 to participate.
Due to our very busy week, there will be no formal reading homework for P1 this week. We will just be reading in class. P2 will have the opportunity to choose a book to read for enjoyment at home but there will be no follow up activities in class.

Hi everyone,
Hope you are having a good weekend!
Just a reminder that tomorrow is a no paper day, therefore we will not be using any paper tomorrow. As homework, we are going to attempt at least two activities from the Eco Homework Grid, which will go on the blog on Monday.
Also a reminder that this week is Big Pedal week and we have opportunities to ride our bikes throughout the week. Please remember to bring a helmet. In addition, Tuesday is the P6 bake sale. A reminder that no home baking can contain nuts due to allergies.
On Wednesday we also have the community café which some members of each class will be taking part in! We are still looking for any parent helpers who may be available to help! If you are able to help could you let your child’s teacher know, thanks!
See you all tomorrow!

P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 20.3.17
Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are having a lovely weekend even though the weather is not the best. Please continue reading for your homework and reminders.
Spelling: This is your final spelling homework of the term. Please complete lists ure or ing in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC in the same way as we do in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your first 6 spelling words. This week we are again focusing on using ambitious connectives in each sentence. Here are some examples: however, instead of, also, after, meanwhile, unless and as well as. Try to include one in each of your sentences. Remember this does not mean you forget about using ambitious vocabulary too. We are trying to use both of these to make your sentences the best they can be.
Reading: We are now at our last two chapters of Danny the Champion of the World. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. Please remember your homework was to read chapters 21 and 22 for Tuesday 21st March. If you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson.
As always if there are any words that you are unsure of please take a note of them in your Book Detectives jotter (remembering the page number) and, if possible, use a dictionary to find out their meaning . We will start our lesson by discussing these in class.
Personal Reading Challenge: You now only have 2 weeks to go with your personal reading challenge. You have all set yourself a target which you are aiming to reach (or beat!) by the end of the challenge. Please remember to record the books you have read in your Reading Passports which are kept in class. Remember to choose your books carefully to ensure they are at the correct level for you. You can also bring a book from home into school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time and will count as part of your reading challenge.
Maths: There is no maths homework this week due to Eco Week, however you can still practise your tables by accessing the links below. Remember we will be continuing our Table Challenge in class this week.
Multiplication Trainer Division Trainer
Eco Week: This week I would like you to chose an activity to complete by Thursday. A link for the activities will be posted on Monday. On Thursday you will be asked to present your Eco Week homework to the class and explain why you chose it.
Here are your reminders for this week:
- On Monday we are having a “No Paper Day”. This includes the use of paper towels. There are hand dryers which can be used however if you prefer you may bring in a small hand towel to use instead.
- P.E. will be on Monday and Thursday this week. Please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school. Please also remember to have a bottle of water with you as you will be working hard.
- All Pupil/Parent Response sheets should be returned to school by Thursday. This will allow me to prepare for any areas your parents may wish to discuss at their appointment.
- Parents’ Night appointment times were issued last Tuesday. Please ensure the confirmation slip is returned as soon as possible so that I know who will be attending parent’s night.
- This week is our first Big Pedal week. You may bring your bike or scooter to school. Please remember a helmet must be worn during our daily sessions in the playground. A plastic bag should be brought to protect your bike seat from the rain.
- On Thursday Primary 5 will be taking part in a danceathon in aid of Red Nose Day. A donation of 50p is required to participate.
- Friday is Red Nose Day. This will be a non-uniform day where you should wear something red to school. A donation of £1.00 has been suggested for doing so.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you tomorrow.
Mrs. Hughes
wk beg 20/03/17

P5S – Homework w/b 20.3.17
Good afternoon everyone! I hope you have been having a lovely weekend so far. Here is your homework for the coming week. Due to our upcoming Eco Week there are slight changes. Please keep reading to see our reminders (there are a lot of them this week).
Spelling: Units 2 and 31 should be completed for Friday. As always, each word should be written out three times and an uplevelled sentence should be written for each spelling rule word. Please remember to consider your VCOP in each sentence.
This week I would like you to continue focusing on using ambitious connectives in each sentence again. Here are some examples: before, as well as, however, also, although and after. Quite a few of you did not do this last week. Try to include one in each sentence. Remember this does not mean you forget about uplevelling your openers and vocabulary. We are trying to use all of these together to make your sentences the best they can be.
Reading: You have a new core reader to complete at home. Please complete the book for Thursday. There will be no written homework for this as all tasks will be completed in class. As always, if there is any vocabulary you are unsure of, please take a note of it and we will discuss it in class on Thursday.
Please remember to read aloud to someone at home. Once again, your feedback form should be completed, if possible, by the person who heard you read and returned to school for Thursday. A huge thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and aunts who took the time to complete this last week. I enjoyed reading your comments!
Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 2 weeks of reading left. A number of you have reached, or are close to reaching, the target number of books set at the beginning of this term. Well done! There is still time for the rest of you to make that last push in the hope of reaching your target. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.
Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class. Remember this is your record of the number of books you have read so far this term.
Maths: There is no maths homework this week due to having Eco activities to complete. If you wish, additional practice of your multiplication tables can be done using the links below.
Eco Week: This week I would like you to choose an activity to complete for Friday. A link for the activities will be posted on Monday. The activity you choose is up to you! On Friday you will be asked to present this aspect of your homework to the class and explain why you chose it.
Please see here for more details on what has been planned by the Eco Committee this week.
Red Nose Day: A number of activities have been arranged for this week to raise money for Red Nose Day. On Monday there will be a chance to “Guess the Number of Sweets” at 10p a go. There will be a bake sale on Tuesday with all cakes being 10p. On Thursday Primary 5 will be taking part in a danceathon and a donation of 50p is required to participate. Finally on Friday there will be a non-uniform day where you should wear something red to school. A donation of £1.00 has been suggested for doing so.
- As part of our Eco Week each class will have the chance to earn “eco points”. To help us raise as many points as possible I would like you to try and bring in a healthy snack for break. You could also bring in a water bottle (instead of cartons of juice) as this will help us gain even more points. One point can be gained for every snack and every water bottle brought in (each day). That is a lot of points!
- On Monday we are having a “No Paper Day”. This includes the use of paper towels. There are hand dryers which can be used however if you would rather you may bring in a small hand towel to use instead.
- P.E. is on Tuesday and Friday . If you have not already done so, please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school.
- Our next library visit is on Tuesday 21st March. We require one parent helper. Please click here for further details.
- Please ensure your Parents’ Night confirmation slip is returned as soon as possible.
- All Pupil/Parent Response sheets should be returned to school by Friday. This will allow me to prepare for any areas your parents may wish to discuss at their appointment.
- This week is our first Big Pedal week. You may bring your bike or scooter to school. Please remember a helmet must be worn during our daily sessions in the playground. A plastic bag should be brought to protect your bike seat from the rain.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. See you all on Monday.
