Today we had our second gymnastics session. We are continuing with our floor work and practicing of the main movements in gymnastics. Please tell someone at home what these movements are called.
In your groups you are creating a routine to show off all of the movements and I have to say most of the groups are taking it very seriously. Once again you were asked to ensure the transitions between moves, and group members, was as smooth as possible. I look forward to seeing your completed routines next week before we move onto the apparatus.
Here are a few (blurry) action shots from this afternoon.
Good afternoon everyone! It’s that time of the week again. We have a short week ahead (In-service for you on Friday). Please keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders for the coming week.
Spelling: List 26 or 33 should be completed for Thursday. Please copy each word out 3 times in your spelling jotter. Detailed sentences for your 6 spelling rule words should be completed also. Please remember to include ambitious VCOP. This week I will be looking for interesting vocabulary being used.
Reading: Please read chapters 12 and 13 of our class novel: The Borrowers. There is no written homework to be completed for this as it will be done in class. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to participate in the class lesson. All reading should be completed for Wednesday 8th.
As discussed in class, if you come across any vocabulary that you are unsure of the definition, please use a dictionary to find this out. You may also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter (remember to take a note of the page number) and we can discuss it in class.
Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 8 weeks of reading left. You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.
Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class.
Listening & Talking: This term you have a solo presentation to complete. You have 3 weeks to plan, organise and prepare your presentation as you will be presenting in class on Tuesday 28th February. Please click here to see the task sheet with all of the details required. If you require a paper copy of the task sheet, please ask.
Maths: Since it is a short week this week (and to allow you to concentrate on your reading) there will be no maths homework this week.
Please remember you may access the Multiplication and Division Trainer for extra practice if you wish. You can access the links below.
See you all on Monday.
Mrs O’Neill
Over the next few weeks you should prepare a solo talk which you will present to the class on Tuesday 28th February. This talk can be on a topic of your choice. The criteria and task sheet for this task can be found below.
Solo Talk Presentation
Learning Outcome: I can research a topic of my choice and create a detailed presentation.
Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select and sort information from a variety of sources and use this for different purposes. LIT 2-14a
Skill for Learning
Application & Knowledge: I can apply my knowledge of a topic of my choice, to plan and produce an interesting presentation.
Skill for Work
I can organise my time and resources independently to ensure my presentation is completed in the allocated time.
Background
To build on your presentation skills you have to prepare a solo talk to present to your peers. Presentations play a huge part in our learning and being able to present to your peers, with confidence, is a great skill to learn. |
Task
What you need to know: You are free to complete your solo talk presentation on any topic you wish. It would be best if you were to pick a topic you are interested in, or involved in already, as this way you will have personal knowledge about the subject you are talking about. For example, it could be about a sport you are involved in, a club you attend, a place you have visited. Your talk should be between 2-3 minutes in length. What you need to do: You need to plan and prepare a talk on a topic of your choice. You may use props and/or visual aids. If you make a PowerPoint it should not be full of writing as this will ensure you are not reading directly from the slides. Photographs may be included which will help prompt you during your talk. Please choose a way you feel will best help you to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen topic. This project is all homework based therefore you need to think about the resources you will have access to: books, library, internet, personal accounts etc. What you need to think about: You can use whatever you need to describe your chosen topic: photographs, videos, props etc. Try to think about why you picked this topic to talk about. Remember some people in class may know nothing about the topic you have chosen to discuss, so you must explain it in detail. How to get started: Get all of your ideas down on paper and then decide which ones are the most relevant and will best engage your audience.

Product Criteria
· You have 3 weeks to pull your presentation together so use your time wisely. You will be presenting your information to the class on Tuesday 28th February 2017.
· This is an independent research project. It is your responsibility to organise your time effectively and ensure you are putting in enough effort. · Everyone will approach this task in different ways so don’t worry if your friends are doing something different from you. Have faith in what you have to say and it will all work out. · This is your chance to show just how well you can take responsibility for your own learning.

Happy researching!
Yesterday we started our gymnastics sessions in P.E.. We are beginning with some floor work and looked at creating individual sequences using the four main movements in gymnastics: rotation, flight, balance and inverse.
How well did you do? Did you manage to incorporate all four moves into your sequence? How well did it flow? We definitely have some naturals among us. Next week you will be showing off your moves to everyone so during our practice session you will need to try and make the transitions between moves as smooth as possible.
Here are a few action shots from yesterday’s session. It was a little tricky to catch everyone performing their moves but I will post some more photographs next week too.
Today we had another German Masterclass with Vincent. Once again, Vincent introduced you to the work of Paul Klee. Klee was a Swiss-German artist who used different media to create his paintings: oil paint, watercolour ink, pastels and etchings.
Today we used oil pastels to recreate one of his designs. Next week you will be adding watercolours to the background to complete them. You worked very quickly today so next week we will be able to move onto another style of art.
Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.
This term our topic is the River Clyde. We are looking at many aspects of the River Clyde. One in particular is the shipbuilding industry as this has played a major role within our local communities over the years.
We were hoping that someone at home, may it be mum, dad or even grandparents, has (or still is) played a part in this industry in some way and would be willing to come in and talk to us about it.
If you are able to help us, please leave a post on our blog or put a note in your child’s diary.
Thanking you in advance.
Mrs O’Neill and Mrs Hughes
Today we will be working on our first task for our River Clyde topic. To have an understanding of the size of the River Clyde you need to be aware of the different places and landmarks found on the River Clyde. It really does cover a very large area!
As always you will have a task sheet to guide you. Please follow the directions on your task sheet closely to ensure you cover all of the areas required. This is a jigsaw task which means you will be responsible for learning about certain landmarks on behalf of your group. You will become the expert!
Please see your task sheet for details of the learning outcomes and skills we are focusing on today.
Only the links below should be used during this task.

Good morning everyone! Another weekend is nearly over. I hope you have had a lovely time. Keep reading for a rundown of our homework and reminders for this week.
Spelling: Units 25 and 32 should be completed this week. You should continue to copy each word out three times in your spelling jotter. You should then write an uplevelled sentence (remembering to use interesting VCOP) for the six spelling rule words. I have been very impressed with the openers being used in your sentences these last few weeks. Well done! I would also like you to consider how you could include some more ambitious connectives alongside these openers. This will make your sentences even more interesting!
This task should be completed by Friday.
Reading: Please read chapters 9 and 10 of our class novel: The Borrowers. There is no written homework to be completed for this as it will be done in class. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to participate in the class lesson. All reading should be completed for Thursday.
As discussed in class, if you come across any vocabulary that you are unsure of the definition, please use a dictionary to find this out. You may also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter (remember to take a note of the page number) and we can discuss it in class.
Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 9 weeks (single figures) of reading left.
Maths: Please click the link below for your maths homework. This task should be completed in your maths homework jotter. You should return this task by Friday.
Please remember you may access the Multiplication and Division Trainer for extra practice if you wish. You can access the links below.

Our fish have arrived! Late this afternoon Lesley, our fish scientist, delivered our fish eggs. It is now our responsibility to look after them ………. and keep them alive!
Each day a different group will be in charge of checking the temperature in the tank (3 times a day), recording the temperatures each time, replacing the ice packs (to keep the temperature at the right setting), keeping the water clean, removing any dead eggs (hopefully not) and replacing the water. All ice packs must be replaced in the freezer too so that we have a constant supply. If you are on duty on a Friday, you have an added responsibility of ensuring we have enough ice packs in the tank to keep it cool ALL weekend. Lots to do and a LOT of responsibility!
Tomorrow afternoon you will all have the opportunity to see the eggs before they start hatching which could happen any day. It’s all very exciting!
Mrs O’Neill
In Masterclass today you completed your Paul Klee (pronounced “clay”) masterpieces and we had some fabulous examples of his work. Well done! I hope you showed them to someone at home.
This week we had some of P4M join us and they had to work really hard on their painting to catch up …… and that they did! A HUGE well done to you five!
Vincent then showed some of you how to complete drawings using squares. Can you remember what this type of art was called?
Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.
On Monday we made shortbread in class. For those of you wanting to make it at home, here is the link to the recipe.
This morning you had the opportunity to bake some shortbread for the whole of Primary 5. Each group had to start from scratch and weigh out all of the ingredients before following the recipe. How closely did you follow the recipe? Did you follow the steps carefully? After all the mixing, it took a little time getting the consistency of the mixture right but we got there in the end.
After all the preparation was completed everyone had to tidy up and we had a few people washing the dishes for the first time. Maybe now you can help out at home!
We waited until this afternoon to try your shortbread so as not to spoil your lunch. What did you think of it? Would you be able to make it at home? If you would like a copy of the recipe, please ask.
P5H were making cranachan for us all. This is a traditional Scottish dessert. Well done to all of you who tried it …… even when you weren’t so keen to do so! Some of you thoroughly enjoyed it and had a second helping.
As always, here are a few photographs from this morning.
Throughout the school Steven Brown’s artwork is proving very popular as quite a few of the classes are recreating their own versions of his coo designs. On Friday afternoon we popped down to P1H to have a look at their coo artwork …….. and we were very impressed!
You were able to comment on the wonderful colours the P1s used and the technique they used to create their coo’s coat. Likewise, when P1H stopped by our class to have a look at our coo designs they could point out the similarities with their own designs
What a fabulous job P1H. Well done!
Good morning everyone! I hope you have been having a great weekend. Here is a rundown of your homework and reminders for this week.
Spelling: As discussed last week there will be no spelling homework this week as we will be retaking our “big” spelling test. This will give you some extra time to work on your Personal Reading Challenge at home.
Reading: Please read chapters 7 and 8 of our class novel: The Borrowers.

Maths: Please click the link below for your maths homework. This task should be completed in your maths homework jotter. Please remember Mrs Hughes has organised your questions this week therefore the post will state homework is due for Thursday. You should return this task by Friday.
Well done, once again, to everyone as this task was completed very well this week. Practice certainly does make perfect!
Please remember you may access the Multiplication and Division Trainer for extra practice if you wish. You can access the links below.
Topic: This week we will be performing our Scottish/Burns poems to both our class and another stage within the school. This will be happening on Tuesday. Please ensure you are practicing your poem so you are word perfect. Please click here to see the areas you will be judges on.
See you all tomorrow.
Mrs O’Neill
Today we had the first of our German Masterclasses with Vincent. Vincent is our German expert who will be working with the upper school classes this term.
Vincent introduced us to the work of Paul Klee. Can you remember how to pronounce his name? Klee was a Swiss-German artist who used different media to create his paintings: oil paint, watercolour ink, pastels and etchings.
Today we used oil pastels and watercolours to recreate one of his designs. Can you remember what it is called? I can’t post a picture of it for copyright reasons but I look forward to showing off your completed designs next week.
Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.
Once again I am a very proud teacher! Your “McCoo” pictures are finished and on the wall. They are absolutely fabulous! What a wonderful job! Please show your finished picture to someone at home.
I am so sorry Lucy L. Your coo picture obviously didn’t upload with the rest. Here it is now. Isn’t is fabulous?
This afternoon we continued with our Scottish Country Dancing and once again, it was great to see so many smiling (albeit a little red) faces. Our dances today were rather energetic as we learned both the Dashing White Sergeant and Strip the Willow.
The majority of you showed great maturity when dancing with one another. Well done to each of you. I was also very pleased at the feedback some of you gave when we discussed what was going well (WWW) with our dancing and how we could improve on it (EBI). Please remember this feedback for next week when we continue with our dancing sessions.
This morning we had another visit to the library where you returned your books and chose some new ones. The enthusiasm shown from so many of you towards our Personal Reading Challenge is wonderful – keep it up! I am very impressed!
We still have 11 weeks of our Personal Reading Challenge to go so still plenty of time for reading. Our next visit to the library will be on Tuesday 21st February.
Here are a few photographs from today’s visit.
Today we had our first whole Primary 5 music session. Mrs Hughes put us through our paces to ensure we were experts at keeping the beat to some of the songs Mrs Lyle taught us last week. We played some more games to help us. Well done to the majority of you who were actively involved and were giving it your all.
It was lovely to see both classes mixing with one another. I am looking forward to our next session together in a couple of weeks. Here are a few photographs from this morning’s session.
Today as part of our mini Scotland topic, we were looking at the artwork by a famous Scottish artist, Steven Brown,. We had to consider how he uses bold colours to create lively and bright paintings.
We focused on Steven Brown’s well known series of Highland cattle paintings known as the McCoo’s. First we looked at some examples of Brown’s artwork and discussed the unique features of each of the cows. You all shared very interesting points about the similarities and differences between Brown’s artwork and were able to consider some of the techniques which he uses to create his paintings.
You all worked really hard on your pieces today, which we will complete tomorrow. Once everyone has finished, we will peer assess each other’s artwork, looking at its strengths and areas to work on. I can’t wait to see these masterpieces completed. They look fantastic!
Here are a few photographs of some of your McCoo masterpieces being created.
See you all tomorrow,
Miss Stanage
Please read each question carefully so you understand fully what is being asked of you and the type of operation which should be used.
Each answer should show all workings and include a sentence answer. This task should be completed and returned to school by Friday.
