Today is World Earth Day.  It is held on 22nd April every year and it is a day to celebrate our planet and think of ways we can look after it even more by making sure we recycle, save water, plant some plants, put rubbish in the bin, and take time to notice nature all around us.

Blending Wednesday

Today we are going to be reading and writing words that have letter blends at the start of the word.

Warm Up:

• Play this game on a tablet/phone or computer: Forest Phonics. Click on the first box with the option for ‘sp gr sl fl‘.

• Watch this video on letter blends:

Main Activity:

• In your jotter, sound out and write the letter blend at the start of each word.

• Remember to form your letters neatly.

• If you would like to, you can draw the picture with the word.

Extra Challenge:

• Write the words in capital letters as well as lower case letters e.g. flag and FLAG.

• Try and write a silly sentence with some of the words you have written e.g. The crab wore a dress and glasses.

Help a Hedgehog to Read

Subtraction Wednesday

• Remember when we subtract the number always gets smaller; we count backwards.

• Minus, take-away, less than and subtract all mean the same thing.

Warm Up:

• Primary 1’s: can you write your numbers backwards from 20?

Main Task:

• Write down your subtraction sums in your jotter and then answer them.

• Remember to put the big number in your pocket and count back the small number using your fingers or use a number line to help you.

Extra Challenge:

• Put the number in your pocket and count back using your fingers until you reach the answer. How many fingers did you need?

Literacy – Writing Tuesday

I can write about a picture.

Today we are going to be writing about a picture of a family at home, which I know you all have a lot of experience of at the moment.  Maybe you could even add some sentences about what you have been doing at home.

Warm up:

You have seen this one before, but it’s a catchy song to help remind you of what you need to remember to write a sentence.

Main Task:

• Look at the picture below.  Talk about it with someone at home.
• Write about the picture using sentences.  Use the words to help you.  Remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

At Home

Example:  The cat is on the rug.

Extra Challenge:

• Try to include a joining word – and, but or because – to join two sentences together.

Example: The cat is on the rug and the dog is eating.

• Can you include any words to describe things?

Example: The cat is on the colourful rug and the cute dog is eating.

• Can you read your story to someone at home?

Addition Tuesday

Today is our day to practise addition.

Warm Up:

• Watch the video below to practise your number bonds to 10.

• Remember to put the larger number in your pocket and count on the smaller number.  Use your fingers or objects you have at home as counters.

• Main Task:

• Copy and complete these addition sums in your jotter.

• Remember when you are adding two numbers together put the big number in your pocket and add on the small number on your fingers.

• When you are doing missing number sums, put the number in your pocket and count on using your fingers until you reach the answer. How many fingers did you need to use to ‘add on’?

Extra Challenge:

• Can you make up your own missing number sums to challenge someone?

• Can you practise some doubles up to 20 using the ‘Hit the Button’ game?

Welcome back primary 1!

I hope you have all enjoyed your Easter break and have had fun and stayed safe with your families.  I have had a nice break with Rosie and Lyla, we made lots of Easter crafts and we have enjoyed the last few days in the sunshine.  I think we even spotted the Easter bunny running under the trees in our garden!   We are also trying to do an 1000 piece jigsaw!  It’s really hard.  I can’t wait to hear about all that you have been up to over the holidays when I see you all again.

Place Value Monday

Warm Up:

• Can you count forwards and backwards to 30?

• Use the video below to count along to and help you.

Main Activity:

• Complete these questions in your jotter.

• Remember to check for the different Primary 1 and Primary 2 questions.

Extra Challenge:

• How far can you write you numbers to? Can you write them all the way to 100?

• How far can you count up in 2′s or 10’s? Can you write them in your jotter?

Phonics Monday

Today we are going to be learning all about the digraph ch.

Warm up:

• Can you remember what a digraph is?

• Watch these two YouTube clips all about ch:

Main Task

• In your jotter write some words with ch e.g  chin, chat, rich.

• Write a sentence with a ch word in it. Remember a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces in your sentence.

• Draw a picture to illustrate your ch sentence.

• Set it out in your jotter like this:

Extra Challenge:

• How many ch words can you write in one sentence e.g. The chick sat on the bench and had a chat and his lunch.

Primary 1,

I hope you’ve been enjoying completing some of the activities over the last few weeks, and please don’t worry if you have only been doing a little.  Just do what you can and when in these tricky times.

I am very proud of everything and anything you have been doing at home, and you will be learning new skills in helping around the house, self management skills due to being in the house all day with your whole family, and many other things.

I will not be posting any more activities now until Monday 20th April, so enjoy your Easter holidays and best you can.  Be kind to everyone in your family and keep an eye out for the Easter bunny! Happy Easter Primary 1.
