Scottish Day

Our annual celebration of Scots poetry was celebrated on 27th January this year to comemorate the birth of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet.  As always, the children practised very hard to learn a Scottish poem.  Then the infant and nursery classes sang a Scottish song, some other classes recited their poem as a whole class and finally, from P.3 to P.7 three children from each class were chosen to recite their poem on Stage in front of the Judges who chose a winner from each class.  Everyone also participated in an Art competition, illustrating their class’s poem.  Again a winner was chosen from each class.  All of the winners and runners up were awarded a certificate during our Monday morning assembly.  In addition, the children were allowed to come to school wearing blue or tartan.  We thoroughly enjoyed our day and especially the irn bru and shortbread!

The Pride of St Lucy’s

On Friday 27th January we celebrated our achievements through the “Pride of St. Lucy’s” Awards.  During the course of the year the children work hard to follow the 3R’s – Respect for yourself, Respect for others and Responsibility for your actions to earn Pride of St. Lucy’s stickers for their chart.  At the end of each term these are counted and the child or children who have earned the most stickers is awarded a medal at our special assembly.  Parents of these children are also invited to celebrate this special achievement and also enjoy a celebratory cup of tea and biscuits with their children afterwards.   Well done to all our winners!

Outdoor Learning and Playground games

Visitors to our school may have noticed that number snakes, letter caterpillars and many more activities and games have been painted in our playgrounds.  Thanks to the Parent Council we now have lots of fun games to play at playtime and our teachers can also use these to provide outdoor learning opportunities.  Doesn’t our playground look great?

During the first term, a team of volunteers from Cummings, a local business, came in to help us tidy up our school garden.  They cleaned up the fish pond, did lots of weeding repotted our plants and and planted lots of bulbs, including fruit and vegetables.  We can’t wait to use our garden now, and are especially looking forward to having our packed lunches out there when the better weather comes.  We might even be able to sample some of our produce!

“Cash-Free” Canteen

From Primary 4 we now use a card system to pay for our lunch as the school lunches are now “cash-fee”.  We top-up our cards using the machine in the dining room or our parents can do it online.  It took a bit of getting used to but we enjoy using the machine and it works well at lunch time reducing the queues.

McMillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 7th October we held a coffee morning in our school hall in aid of the McMillan Cancer Charity which was organised by our Charity committee.  Parents, Grandparent and members of our local community were all invited along to enjoys cakes and a cuppa.  £616.72 was raised at the coffee morning through donations, a raffle, cake auction and cake and candy for pupil afterwards.  This was more than double what we raised last year.  Thank you for your hard work in baking such wonderful cakes and for coming along to enjoy them.

P.6 Leadership Course

On Mondays the children in P.6 attended a training course at lunchtime.  Stuart, the active schools co-ordinator came in to teach us playground games in the gym hall.  We are now using what we learned to teach the P.1’s and 2’s in the playground.  The P.6’s have improved their leadership skills and the younger pupil have learned lots of new running, chasing and action games which they thoroughly enjoy.  “Poison”, “Shark Attack”, “Queenie” and “Freeze Dodge” are some of our favourites.

Communions

On Sunday 22nd May, ten of our Primary 4’s made their First Holy Communion.  Mass was celebrated at St. Lucy’s Parish Church by Father Campbell.  On the 5th June,  some of the other children will also receive the sacrament of Communion.  The children have worked very hard in class to prepare for this very special occasion.

Class 4

What a busy start to the last term of Primary 3!  The boys in Class 4 have especially enjoyed their Numeracy lessons – sharing and grouping M & M’s as an introduction to multiplication and division.  Number work has never been so yummy!

They are also enjoying preparing a puppet show relating to their topic of Birds and Mammals.  Do you know how elephants got their trunks?

…Come to Class 4’s puppet show and find out!!
