It’s ‘Welcome Wednesday’ and a very warm St. Barbara’s welcome to our new intake…the new Primary 1 children and all of your families.
While many of you are familiar with the school, some of you have never seen it before and you will have that opportunity at some point today.
On this special page you will find lots of information about the school including a video tour, letters and pictures from your Buddies and a special ‘Expert Area.’
The Expert Area has been created especially for you by our current Primary 1 children.
We can’t wait to see you all in school in August. In the meantime, please scroll down and enjoy!
I hope you are all up, have had breakfast and are ready to continue with your weekly activities.
R.E.
Close your eyes, join your hands and let us begin the day with our morning prayer.
God our Father
As we prepare to begin our work
We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us
So that we may fully benefit from our day together.
During the month of May we honoured Our Lady. We created a special altar, said decades of the rosary and completed lots of different activities that reminded us how important Our Lady is.
The month of June is the month of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart is seen as the essence of a person. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ Himself. Next week (19th June) we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this always takes place 19 days after Pentecost.
Throughout the Gospel, we experience the outpouring of Jesus’ love from His heart. We experience this love from the miracle stories, His forgiveness of sinners and His compassion for those who are suffering. Kind and caring are two words that come to mind when I think of Jesus, can you think of more words that can be used to describe Him?
Look closely at the image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. What do you notice about His heart? Why do you think this is? What does it symbolise? Think of the things that happened in Jesus’ life to help you understand why Jesus’ heart is shown like this.
Do you have an image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home?
Task 1
Use the image of The Sacred Heart that has been included or find an image from the internet and use it as a stimulus to create your own picture of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. When you have finished your drawing, display it proudly in your home. This can be a special place for you to pray to The Sacred Heart of Jesus over the course of this month.
I have also attached an image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus that you can choose to colour if drawing the image is too tricky.
We say a special devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. Try saying this special prayer every day during the rest of June.
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee.
Task 2
Get a piece of paper, fold it in half and cut half a heart shape. Younger pupils may need some help from an adult for this. When it is open a full heart shape will be visible. Decorate the paper and then stick it on top of another sheet of paper. You should then have a blank heart shape on your paper. Write the special devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus in the centre of your heart.
Decorate this and email it to your teacher or, with permission, upload it onto TWITTER.
Weekly STEM Activities
This is your last day to enjoy all of the STEM activities. So, on you go, try a different STARTER, MAIN AND DESSERT OR EXTRA
from the MENU below.
Enjoy and have fun and don’t forget to email your work to your teacher or, with permission, upload it onto TWITTER. We have loved seeing all of your creative minds at work during this week.
Please find a schools’ update below. We will issue specific information in respect of St. Barbara’s to you later this month.
Schools update – 8 June 2020
We’re working on plans to make schools as safe as possible for our children and young people when they return in August. Take a look at this video so you know the principles that we are working to.
Understandably you will have lots of other questions on issues that we’re still working on. Please bear with us and we will make more announcements as soon as we can.
We were talking yesterday about how important it is to look after our bodies. Drinking plenty especially during exercise and warm weather to keep us hydrated. Our bodies are amazing things.
Here is a little activity to keep you busy and at the same time learn about all of the parts that make up ‘US’!!
Have you got a roll of wallpaper lying around or if you have been receiving lots of packages (did you know all our posties are busier than their busiest time of the year, Christmas!) during lockdown and have cardboard boxes around I want you to lie them flat on the ground and get someone in your house to draw round you. (The weather’s not looking that good today but should be dry so even do this task outside).
Here we have our template!! Can you label and identify as many parts of the human body – all our organs? See if you can have a good guess at where they are located. Our heart 💓 should be easy, what about our lungs, liver etc. Try to see how many you can find. You could even put your artistic talents to good use and draw them in.
Remember to email your marvellous pictures to gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk or upload it onto Twitter with an adult’s permission.
Literacy
Time for some fabulous Literacy Work! Have a look and enjoy!
The first is an Acrostic poem by Hannah. Well done!
Now for another wonderful poem, this time by Euan – well done!
Now for the third acrostic poem of the day and this time it’s Hollie’s poem. Fantastic!
Well done, everyone and thank you for sharing your work with all of us!
This week you have been creating sets of cards:
Set 1: Six character cards with associated colours and accessories. You had pictures on each and a brief description
Set 2: Nine room cards with pictures and a brief description of each room
Set 3: Six accessory cards with the picture and the name of the accessory on each.
You were also asked to research the game of Cluedo including the layout of the board and the rules.
Thursday’s Task
Your task is to create a board game of your own. You can use Cluedo as an inspiration or you can be totally original.
The game must be for between three and six players.
All of your cards should be used.
Once you have designed your game you should make a set of easy-to-follow instructions so that others in your class can try it.
The instructions should:
List the contents of the ‘box’
The aim of the game (what you have to do to win)
A list of what each player needs in order to play
Rules of play – what you are allowed/not allowed to do
A rule for deciding who plays first (the youngest child; roll dice – lowest number etc.)
Anything else which a player would need to know in order to play YOUR game
WARNING: You do not have to complete this whole task today…it might take a few designs and rule changes before you get it just right!
Please send pictures of your game to:

Mental Challenge: Multiplication
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
Select: Level 3 or Level 4 or Level 5
This week the mental maths challenges have all been linked to multiplication.
Select three tables and set yourself a challenge. Aim for 3 or 5 second intervals. However, if you need more thinking time, that’s fine. Better to think it through correctly than rush and make an error!
Now select two challenges from the mixed section.
Weight
We have been looking at weight this week – specifically at grams and kilograms.
Try these:
monkey snake tarantula tiger elephant
List these zoo animals in order beginning with the one you think weighs most.
Change from kilograms to grams.
a) 8kg b) 12kg c) 14 1/2 kg d) 31kg e) 5kg 800g f) 21kg 6g
Change these weights to kilograms OR to kilograms and grams.
a) 7000g b) 17 000g c) 40 000g d) 6800g e) 8060g f) 10 001g
Jenny and Mandy weigh themselves on some bathroom scales.
Jenny weighs 49 and a half kilograms. Mandy weighs 50kg 200g.
How much more does Mandy weigh?
A box of shopping arrives at Mrs Brown’s house.
It includes 4 tins of soup, 3 jars of pickles and 5 pot noodles.
If a tin of soup weighs 400g, a jar of pickles, 300g, a pot noodle 70g and the box itself weighs 200g what is the total weight of the box and its contents?
Answers will be posted at 3.00pm today.
R.E.
As we know things just now are very different from what we are used to. By now our new Primary 1 children would have been in to visit the school but, like you, they have not been able to come in for their visits. We are thinking that it would be a lovely idea for you to say a little prayer for them. In order to make them feel welcome to our school in August, I would like you to choose the word for your stage below, write/colour it on a sheet of paper, hold it up and ask an adult to take a picture of you holding your word with a big smile and if it is possible you could wear your uniform. Please email your picture to gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk
We will use these to make our Primary 1s feel very welcome in school.
I hope that you have enjoyed breakfast and are no ready to go!
Let’s begin with the morning prayer:
God our Father
As we prepare to begin our work
We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us
So that we may fully benefit from out day together. Amen.
Health and Wellbeing
I hope you enjoyed your Slushies yesterday!! We just managed to get them made in the warm weather as today is to be a bit cooler.
YOGA 🧘♀️ 🧘♂️
We are going to follow a little Yoga session that Mrs McFall (Daniel and Luke’s mum) has kindly allowed us to share on the Blog.
Below is a great Yoga workout that you can do along with an adult or your siblings. You can also have your favourite ted join in too.
Yoga is a great skill helping you learn the importance of how you breath which in turn helps us relax and sleep well. (Parents: Mrs McFall recommends that you allow your child to go with the flow and, if you are able to accompany them doing the video, ask them similar questions). Remember with any exercise we should remember to drink plenty to keep us hydrated, looking after our bodies!!
Once again a great big thank you to Mrs McFall and Luke. 👏👏

Literacy Tasks
First News: please select from assigned Comprehension, Crossword and Word Definition tasks.
Scholastic: please continue with your selected book. If you have finished, please complete the quiz and choose another book. You should aim to read for twenty-thirty minutes each day.
Literacy: Recap of Yesterday’s Task
Step 1
Decide on six characters. In the game you have Professor Plum, Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard etc. You can give your character a title e.g. Lord Lime, Captain Chloe -it’s up to you!
Step 2
Give each of your characters a colour and a few characteristics: for example, Lord Lime might be green in colour, he might have a walking stick and he might be sneaky, dishonest and cunning.
Step 3
Think of a setting. In the original edition of Cluedo each room belonged to a mansion with nine rooms.
You can choose any setting – but it must have nine rooms also. It could be a castle, a spaceship etc. List the nine rooms.
Step 4
Decide on six accessories the characters might have e.g. a walking stick, a metal briefcase etc.
Task
Draw each of your characters just like Top Trump cards. The top of each card should show the name of the character. Their clothes should clearly show which colour you have selected for them and each should feature the chosen accessory.
On the bottom of each card, write a brief description of the character based on the characteristics. You don’t need to add any categories or gradings (e.g. Magic 70 above).
Keep your cards somewhere safe.
Wednesday’s Tasks
For today’s task, you must create two sets of cards of an identical size to those you made yesterday.
Set 1: these cards will show each of the nine rooms you decided upon yesterday. You will create a picture and a brief description of the room.
Set 2: each card will show one of the accessories you decided upon yesterday. The card should have a picture of the accessory and its name.
Keep all of your cards somewhere safe.
Task 2
Research the game, CLUEDO – if you haven’t already played it before. Make sure that you know the rules and that you know what you need to play the game apart from the cards above. Have a look at the board itself. How many squares doe it have?
Numeracy
Mental Challenge: Multiplication

Select: Level 3 or Level 4 or Level 5
Think carefully about which tables you know and which require more practice. If you know a table really well, don’t waste time on it…move to one you’re not sure about.
Select two to focus on and then choose one from the mixed section.
Weight
Over the last few days we have been looking at units of measurement used in weighing: grams and kilograms.
There is a reminder for you below.
Kilogram and Gram
A gram is a small unit which is used to weigh objects. It indicates how heavy the object is.
A kilogram is made up of 1000 grams.
Today I have some word problems for you. They are all about weight – and you will have to add or subtract.
Task 1
Bella is having a sleepover and she has bought the following ingredients for breakfast the following morning.
Croissants 270g Muffins 440g
Buns 340g Pancakes 315g
Waffles 150g Butter 1kg 200g
Jam 710g
45 Bread Rolls
Remember to write out each calculation before you attempt it.
a) What is the total weight of the croissants, the buns and the muffins?
b) What is the total weight of the pancakes, the waffles, the butter and the jam. ( Top Tip: You might want to change the weight of the butter into grams first).
c) What is the total weight of all of the items (don’t include the bread rolls)
d) Write the total weight of answer c) in kilograms and grams
e) There are exactly enough rolls for everyone to have 4 and a half each. How many people were at the sleepover breakfast?
Task 2
Bella’s mum went shopping too.
She bought two and a half kilograms of cherries to bake a cherry pie.
She set aside 750g of the cherries to make jam.
a) How many grams of cherries did Bella’s mum buy?
b) How many grams of cherries were used to make the cherry pie?
Task 3
The postman delivered two parcels: one for Bella and one for her mum.
Bella’s parcel weighed 4kg 200g and her mum’s weighed 3kg 850g.
a) How much heavier was Bella’s parcel?
b) What was the total weight of both parcels?
Answers will be posted at 3.00pm today.

Over the course of the last few days we have been learning about the importance of Pentecost. It has shown us how important the feast is in the church’s year.
There are a few activities below which you can complete to reinforce what you have learned about The Feast of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. You can choose to do one activity or why not complete it together with your siblings.
When you have finished your activities, take a few minutes to pray together with your family. I have attached a lovely hymn that you could sing together to finish off your Pentecost work for today.

Health and Wellbeing meets STEM!
With the hot weather that hopefully we have all been enjoying we are going to look at ways to help us stay hydrated. We know that we need to drink plenty of water and ensure we do that more frequently during hot days.
Another great way to enjoy the hot weather is with a lovely cool Slushie!!
Yum Yum. Below there is a great recipe, with a little bit of science thrown in, that lets you make a slush with your hands!! Yip that is right you don’t need a fancy NutriBullet or a blender, just your hands. So here goes :
Instructions to make a cool mouth-watering smoothie!!
Place one cup of your chosen juice into a small Ziploc bag and zip tight.
Place 4 cups of ice and half a cup of salt into a large Ziploc bag along with the juice bag and zip that tight too.
Shake the large bag over the sink or outside for 2-5 minutes or until the juice bag turns to slush.
Pour into a cup and enjoy!!
If you have your own recipe/method for making a Slushie please email this along with a picture of your Slushie to gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk or upload it onto Twitter with an adult’s permission.

Weight
Yesterday we began looking at units of measurement we use in weighing: grams and kilograms.
There is a reminder for you below.
Kilogram and Gram
A gram is a small unit which is used to weigh objects. It indicates how heavy the object is.
A kilogram is made up of 1000 grams.
Yesterday we changed grams to kilograms and kilograms to grams. We’ll do a little more of that today.
Remember: 2kg = 2000g 4kg 630g = 4630g
Try these:
Change these to grams:
a) 62kg b) 19kg c) 58kg 241g d) 13kg 827g e) 1kg 52g f) 26kg 305g g) 87kg 2g
Change these to kilograms:
a) 8000g b) 19 000g c) 92 000g d) 48 000g e) 31 000g f) 65 000g g) 5000g
The weights below are in grams. Change them to kilograms OR to kilograms AND grams:
a) 87 000g b) 16 000g c) 4000g d) 8900g e) 15 400g f) 3200g g) 60 000g
The Feast of Pentecost is a very important celebration in the Church’s year and watching the short clip below will give you a snapshot of the importance of this great celebration.
The Feast of Pentecost is seen as the Birthday of the Church.
The Holy Spirit came to the disciples not only as a reminder that Jesus would always be with them but so that they received the strength and courage to continue to build God’s kingdom, not only in Jerusalem but to ensure it reached the ends of the earth. In John’s Gospel on Sunday we heard not only about Jesus’ word but about Jesus’ action, “he breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit”. Jesus’ breath gives new life, eternal life into the disciples, giving them the courage to go out and spread the word by being given special gifts. Jesus gave them the gift of speaking different languages to be able to carry out his work all over the world.
The Holy Spirit came to us in the Sacrament of Baptism and will or has come again to us in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Talk to an adult about your Baptism/Confirmation (if you have made it yet). Think about all the wonderful gifts God has given us and give thanks to the Lord for all that we have to be glad of. Just like the disciples we give thanks to the Lord of all the gifts he has given us. We are so grateful to God for always being with us.
Please select an activity from your grid….and then you’re finished for the day! Well done, everyone! Time to relax and I’ll see you tomorrow.
