Friday 12th March 2016

Primary 6/7 had a great time at the annual Shotts and District Rotary Club Quiz this morning.  It took place in St. Patrick’s Parish Hall.  Teams from St. Patrick’s, Dykehead, Allanton, Alexander Peden, Kirk o’Shotts and Stane Primaries entered a team of four pupils.  The quiz comprised of eight rounds, one based on each area of the Curriculum for Excellence.

At the interval, our team were in second place but unfortunately by the end of the quiz, we didn’t manage to place.  However, I was very proud of the effort and attitude of the team and the rest of the class who were there to spectate.  The event was extremely well organised by the Rotary Club.

Primary 1/2 and Primary 2 had a great morning with the nursery children from the ‘am’ session today as part of the monthly shared structured play learning morning.  The children were working in stations based on ‘People Who Help Us’ and had great fun together.  In the afternoon, the pm session children joined in Golden Time activities.  This programme has been such a success for the school as the nursery children are becoming so confident being in and around the school.

Friday evening was the annual Parent Council Bingo night.  I would never have believed that last year’s wonderful evening could have been topped, but it certainly was.  The Marble Club was absolutely packed with friends, relatives and supporters of the school.  The grand total raised was £1029 – a phenomenal amount which will make a huge difference to our children.  Already this year, the Parent Council have contributed to new football strips and track-suits, the Pantomime excursion and the P6 Theatre Outing.

I would like to thank each and every person who contributed to the success of the evening – those on the Parent Council who worked tirelessly to organise it; everyone who came along to support and also to the people who donated raffle prizes or made a donation in lieu of a ticket.

It’s during events like this that I am reminded how fortunate I am to be the Head Teacher of a school that is the at the centre of a thriving and supportive community!

World Book Day 2016

We have moved our World Book Day celebrations to Friday 4th March 2016, in order to accommodate the P5 swimming lessons.

On Friday, all pupils and staff are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book.  Lots of boys and girls have been telling us about their ideas and they sound very exciting.  We can’t wait to see you all dressed  up!

We will have a costume parade in the hall on Friday morning so that we can all show off our costumes.  Prizes will be awarded for the most original outfit from each class – Mr Clark will be our judge!

All children will then be involved in our ‘Whole School Read’ where we all split up into groups and listen to a story read by a member of our staff team.  There will be lots of exciting titles to choose from.

We are also holding a ‘Book Swap’ during the day on Friday.  Can all pupils please bring in a pre-loved book from home to donate, and then they can select a ‘new’ one to take home with them to enjoy.

We would like to thank all our parents/carers in advance for their support.  We are looking forward to a fun filled World Book Day!

World Book Day 2016

World Book Day 2016 is fast approaching, so the time has come to start thinking about which character we will come to school dressed as!

On Thursday 3rd March 2016, we will be celebrating World Book Day in the school and nursery.  All staff and pupils are invited to dress up as a favourite character from a book on the day.  Prizes will be awarded for the most original outfit from each class.

Lots of ideas and inspiration for simple to create costumes can be found on the WBD website at www.worldbookday.com.

During the day, all the children in the school and nursery will be involved in listening to stories read by different members of staff around the school.  This promotes reading together and reading for enjoyment and has proved a popular activity in the past!

We will also be holding a ‘Book Swap’ on World Book Day.  All pupils can bring in one book from home (in excellent condition) which they can swap for a different book to take home with them!  More details on the arrangements for this will follow.
