Welcome P1/2. First Reflection of the New School Year August 2019 Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Byrne

NEW LEARNING

P1/2 have made a great start to the first term.  They have been learning about School Rules and have even created some of their own.  They have learned where to hang their coats, put their bag,  how to self register for lunch and have found out where many of their other classrooms are throughout the school.  However with   September’s  First Friday Mass coming up, P1/2 paid a visit to the church for the first time as a new P1/2 Class.

R.E.  – T.I.O.F. (This is Our Faith)

Here they are getting ready to go on their first visit to Holy Family Parish Church together…

… and here they are inside, learning how to sit and behave  respectfully.  The children have also been learning  about having respect for others, their faith and beliefs and to treat each other with kindness.  Saying kind words  and using kind hands.

Literacy

The children are learning to read spell and write, through ‘North Lanarkshire’s  Active Literacy Programme’ using lots of their different resources and strategies to help them learn their alphabet, but also to learn what each phonic letter of the alphabet looks and sounds like and how to blend them to make words.  The children  are also using animated film clips and  song to help develop their learning  and  having  a lot of fun (as in Maths)  using shaving foam and bubbles etc., to do this!

Numeracy and Maths

The children are learning about number. ( as well as shape) They are developing their knowledge of the  ‘ SEAL’ approach to learning and are having fun using  these strategies as well as  others  to  develop their learning  in a very enjoyable way.

Learning through Free Play and …

…Outdoor Learning

Children,  you have really worked hard in your first few weeks in P1/2.  Mrs Stevenson and I are so proud of you all.  Well done!

Primary 2

We have been settling in well to Primary 2 and have enjoyed getting to know our new routines. We particularly enjoyed reading the story ‘Have You Filled a Bucket Today?’ where we learned that by showing kindness and love, we fill the invisible buckets that other people carry. We are now trying to earn pom poms for our own buckets by working hard, helping and behaving well. Mrs Simpson is very proud of everyone as we are trying so hard!

We have been revising a variety of previously taught phonemes and common words within Literacy, and have been carrying out a range of tasks and activities to consolidate our previous learning. We especially loved playing the game ‘Pot Luck’ with a partner, and using playdough to make ‘ch’ words.

In Maths we have been focusing on addition up to 20. We are learning a range of strategies to help us to do this. We also enjoy our number talks and using our Show Me boards to help us learn.

We have been learning Spanish and especially enjoyed the games we played to help us learn Spanish colours. Mrs Simpson is very proud as we are already doing our register and following commands in Spanish. Muy bien Primary 2!!

P1/2 Final June Reflection before the Holidays. Mrs Stevenson/Mrs Byrne

SCIENCE/MATHS/LITERACY

P1/2 have been working so hard as they approach the end of the School Year and Summer Holidays, it has all just flown in.

The children have really enjoyed Science and investigating Living and Non-Living Things.  As they leave to go home for the holidays, they take with them some of the variety of Sunflowers  they have brought on from seed in a propagator.   The children have  now re-potted  their seed pods into pots with more soil,  to take home to water and watch them grow.

Some will grow bigger than others and can be planted in the garden when they out grow there pots.

We’d love to see how they get on during the holidays if you have time to take pictures.

The children also wrote out clear instructions on How to Grow your own Sunflower from Seed’  re-pot it and finally transfer it from the pot to the Garden.

HEALTH AND WELL BEING/R.E.

SPONSORED TEDDY BEARs PICNIC/WALK FOR ST ANDREWS HOSPICE

P1/2 enjoyed their Sponsored Teddy Bear Walk and Picnic, as they  helped to  raise funds for St Andrews Hospice.  The children enjoyed it even more as they were able to take along their own very special teddies, which  they brought in  to show the class and share a special story about them.

OUR SCHOOL TRIP TO ABERDOUR – Being Outdoors/ Spending Time with Friends and Having Fun

….With the whole school, P1/2 had a really terrific time just being together and having fun on the Silver Sands  beach, at Aberdour.

This was a fantastic end to the last week of term as the school holidays were about to begin.

Well done P1/2 for all your hard work over the school year. You have made Mrs Stevenson and I very proud of you.  Have a well deserved rest and we will look forward to seeing you as you move on to P2 and P3 when you come back after the holidays.  God Bless and have a lovely time.

Summer Term in P4/5

We have been learning about India this term. These beautiful Rangoli patterns have been inspired by the Hindu tradition for festivals.

We have also done some beautiful artwork as part of our work on Pentecost and Corpus Christi.

Whilst some of our class were preparing for the school show, the rest were doing STEM activities. They worked on Beebots and Spheros, aswell as building bridges and towers. These children did a great job presenting their work to the rest of the class.

P1/2a Reflection

P1/2a have been extremely busy over the past few weeks.

In literacy, we have finished learning all of our new sounds and common words for the year and have been busy consolidating this knowledge. We have also been doing lots of writing linked to our topic of journeys. We created passports, boarding passes, in-flight menus and stories about exciting journeys.

In numeracy, we have been working hard on our numbers to 20 and have also covered the topic of money. We enjoyed investigating the different types of coins and using money to buy items in our play shop.

As part of HWB, we made sandwiches for our whole school picnic. We have also been talking a lot about our feelings and emotions and have identified the many ways in which we are the same and different from one another. In PE, we really enjoyed our multi-sports sessions which had a big focus on tennis.

We also enjoyed creating paintings inspired by the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and have engaged in drama activities based on the story ‘The Magical Toy Box’.  We also enjoyed welcoming Snuggles the teddy from St. Andrews hospice into our class and have been busy learning songs about bears to make him feel welcome. We are so looking forward to our Teddy bear walk on Monday!

Our topic this term has been journeys and we have really enjoyed our play sessions based around the airport. We have enjoyed taking on the roles of pilots, flight attendants, security guards and passengers. We have also enjoyed making lego constructions of ships, planes and buses.

P1/2 May Reflections Mrs Stevenson/Mrs Byrne

P1/2 worked very hard to prepare for their First Friday Mass.  This being the Month of May, was a very special month to honour Our Lady.  The children read beautifully and all contributed to the mass very respectfully.  You should be so very pleased and proud of what you have achieved,  boys and girls especial our P1 children who have taken part in their ‘First Friday Mass’ for the very  first time.  So proud of you all, well done P1/2.

NUMERACY

As the weather picked, up the children looked forward to getting  outside to learn about numeracy . They used  a variety of resources to help them in their learning.   They really enjoyed being outdoors and had fun learning about number in a different way.  Great work P1/2.

LITERACY

Grammar in the Garden

P1/2 are having fun with their Literacy too,  particularly when they headed  outdoors to their classroom in the sunshine.  Working together in groups, pairs and individually, the children worked hard on their reading, writing, talking and listening skills and found that this kind of learning  helped them to relax,  focus and enjoy their learning even more.

STAR WRITERS

As the children look forward to summer, they’re learning reflects this and one of P1/2’s Summer topics will be ‘At the Seaside’.  The children have made their very own Passport, included important information and as the temperature gets warmer, P1/2 have made  Eco and/Sun Safety Posters to display around the school, to remind us of ways to save our planet and also of the precautions we should take to stay Safe in the Sun.

Literacy/Health and Wellbeing /People Place and Environment/            Expressive Arts

 H&WB  –  THE RAINBOW FISH
After hearing and discussing the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ which is a story of friendship, happiness, morals, values and sharing, the children  made their own ‘Rainbow Fish’ and as Health Week approached,  their  discussion and active participation continued as they learned about ’emotions’ and the importance of keeping their ‘mind’ as well as their ‘body’ healthy.
Healthy Whole School Picnic
Our class had fun on Thursday as we made our ‘healthy’ corn wraps with ‘healthy’ fillings, for our Whole School ‘Healthy’ Picnic in the afternoon. We couldn’t go outside because of the rain but still had a great time with our blankets, teddies and friends, when we had our picnic in the hall instead.  Above are some of our pictures.
…P1/2  also decided that they would like a  quick, final practise of their races before the School Sports Day on Friday.
SCHOOL SPORTS DAY
Our P1/2 School Sports Day Pictures (More to come)
P1/2, you all had such a great time at our School  Sports Day.   In particular we had a  wonderful display of good sportsmanship.  What a fantastic way to  end Eco/Health Week.
We also did our very best to use this week to think about natural ways that we can be kinder to our environment and our planet  as we go about our daily lives.

Finally thank you to P 6/7 for  supporting P1/2 and showing  them how to help clean up the park in preparation for our school sports day but  also to help make it a nice and clean place for our community to use.
Fantastic Job everyone (P1- 7).  Well done.
