Primary 7a January update

It was so lovely to have all of the children back after the Christmas break. All ready and refreshed to begin their last few months as Holy Family pupils.

We have been incredibly busy in Primary 7a this month and have lots to look forward to for the rest of the year.  We are also very lucky to have Miss Walker joining us for 5 weeks. She will leave us at the end of February but she has lots of fun planned for us for the next few weeks.

Literacy

In literacy we are all working on the novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’.  The children are loving this book so far and are doing really well to keep up with the reading that I have assigned for them to do at home. If any are struggling, I have suggested audible or you tube to listen to the book being read and they can read along as sometimes reading a lot all at once can be a lot for some children.

Numeracy

In numeracy we covered negative numbers, the children have learned this very quickly and are able to use them in a variety of contexts. We have since moved on to Time, which again the class have demonstrated a great knowledge of which I am extremely impressed with.  If you could reinforce the reading of timetables at home such as tv schedules, train and bus time tables this would be greatly appreciated.

Health and Wellbeing

Our PE days are currently on a Tuesday and a Thursday, this month we have been focusing on hockey on a Tuesday with Miss Walker which has been really fun. On a Thursday we have been working together with primary 7b and have being focusing on fitness keeping up with the healthy new year resolutions.

Topic

Our class novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is directly linked to our topic this term which is World War 2. The children are loving this already and have learned lots about how the war began and about the leaders of the countries involved. We will be focusing on the British front before moving on the the German perspective. I am sure the children will love this.

T.I.O.F

In RE we have had a focus on the beatitudes and have learned about some missionaries. The children have really enjoyed this and it has led really well on to their preparation for their Confirmation which will take place in April. We have started the booklet to help them to prepare and in line with this they will have home activities to complete with you at home. I am aiming to have a majority of these completed before Easter break and the children will be given notice of when the next one is due.

We are looking forward to what February brings for our class.

Primary 6/7a Reflective Friday post

We have had a very busy start to our new term, We had a great video chat with Dawn Childs, a group engineering director at Merlin Entertainment, where we learned all about her job and asked lots of interesting questions. We also had a visit from the SSPCA and really enjoyed making our own robots. The Cardinal Newman science ambassadors came to use this month also and taught us all about air resistance. We all had the opportunity to make our own parachutes to protect an egg. Our class really enjoyed this.

In Maths we have been working reading both digital and analogue times as well as changing 12hr time to 24hr time and back again. We have also been calculating time duration and looking at the various units of time. If we could ask that a focus is given to this at home we would appreciate it as it would really help us to improve.  We have also been learning about length and measuring a variety of items using mm, cm and m. We will continue to work on these next month.

We started our new topic Natural disasters and all cannot wait to learn more about each of these extreme weather situations. So far we have learned a lot about Volcanoes and have investigated some very famous volcano eruptions. This allowed us to learn about the structure of the earth and how volcanoes are formed and erupt. Next we will be learning about earthquakes and how they occur.

We are looking forward to February and can’t wait to learn more.

December Reflective Friday

Primary 6/7a have had a very busy month and have learned lots of new things.

Firstly we really enjoyed producing all of our entrepreneur me products and had fun selling them after the Nativity performances. This was a great success and we would like to thank you all for buying all of our products.

In class we have learned a lot about the season of Advent and have prepared ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We also have learned about Christmas in the past and how it was celebrated during the Victorian era.

In Maths we have been working on mental and written subtraction and also about co-ordinates which has been really fun. We have continued to read our Cathy MacPhail books and will continue these in January.

We can’t wait for our holidays to spend some time at home with our families. Primary 6/7a would like to wish everyone a healthy and Holy Christmas. See you in 2019.

Primary 6/7a November update

November was a very busy month for primary 6/7a, our Primary 7’s spent a week away in Kilbowie with Miss McGuire and the Primary 6’s stayed here with Mrs Leblond and Miss Gallagher. The primary 7’s had a great time and enjoyed all the activities that we took part in, coasteering and gorge walking were our favourites. Primary 6’s did a lot of learning while we were away, they designed their own children’s hotel and learned about remembrance day too.

In literacy, we all started new novels. We are using 2 Cathy McPhail books, Mosi’s War and Tribes, we are really enjoying them so far and can’t wait to keep reading. In Maths, we have been doing written and mental addition and subtraction. We are getting much better at this but need lots of practise. We have loved learning about schools in the Victorian era, we were really surprised about the punishments they used to receive and are very grateful that they are no longer used in schools.

We have also been very busy working on businesses for Entrepreneur me. We enjoyed thinking about what we could sell and creating our business plans. We are ready to start making our products and can’t wait to sell them during the nativity shows in a few weeks.

We are looking forward to the month of December and all the Christmas activities that we have coming up.

Primary 6/7a

Primary 6/7a are still working very hard and enjoying all of our class lessons. We are still working on our Victorians topic and have learned a lot about children during that time. I don’t think they would trade places anytime soon considering some of the jobs they had to do. We have investigated the life of Queen Victoria and of Beatrix Potter, we are looking forward to researching more famous individuals from this era.

In Maths we have moved on to learning about decimals. We are trying very hard to understand this new concept and any help at home would be greatly appreciated. Also if you could encourage the children to be on sumdog as often as possible, to help them further improve their Mathematics skills.

We are still reading the Eleventh Orphan and working on our knowledge of the comprehension strategies. Some of us have recently started reading The Worst Witch and have enjoyed what we have read so far.

We are looking forward to the rest of October!!

Primary 6/7a back to school

Primary 6/7a are settling into their new class very well. The primary 7’s are enjoying being buddies to our new Primary 1 children and are taking on the responsibility of class monitoring. The Primary 6’s are enjoying their new responsibilities too and are being great role models to our younger children.

In class we have been learning about place value and working really hard to practise and learn our times tables. We have started a class novel called The Eleventh Orphan which is set in the Victorian era. This book helps us learn more about our topic The Victorians and we are looking forward to learning more about the lives of people in the past.

Homework will be handed out weekly on a Monday and should be brought back on a Friday. Please ensure children are practising times tables and spelling words at home.

Thanks

Motherwell/Bellshill Cross Country

Well done to the P5-7 cross country team for an excellent effort yesterday.  The children took part in the Motherwell/Bellshill competition at Dalziel Park.  We are so proud that every child completed the challenging course.  A few children improved on their personal best! A special congratulations to one of the P7 boys who came 3rd in his race and to the P5 boys who came 1st and 2nd in their race.  Our P5 boys team came 2nd overall in their category, as did our P6 boys team and P7 boys team!
