Examples of Non-Digital Activities

Learning Intentions:
To investigate everyday basic separation techniques in the kitchen and become more aware of these in everyday life.

Separation Techniques
Pupils dissolve some salt in water to make a salt solution and pour it onto a large dinner plate and leave on a window ledge or next to a radiator. the water evaporates and you have recovered the salt. Key terms are dissolving and evaporation.

Attempt to dissolve flour, sand, sugar and salt in water and work out which substances are soluble or insoluble. Similarly with nail varnish. Key terms are solubility soluble, solutions and insolubility.
Add a spot of colouring from an MM, smartie or felt tip pen, at bottom of a strip of paper and place vertically in a glass jar with a little water at the bottom and watch the single colour separate into different individual colours. Key term is Chromatography.

Use a sieve to separate spaghetti (potatoes) and water. Key term is Filtration.

Add some salt to a pot of boiling water and notice the water stops boiling, which proves that any impurities in a liquid will increase the boiling point. Key terms are boiling point and impurities.
