Brannock Languages Faculty is committed to providing all learners with a wide ranging educational experience, where the expertise of all staff is used to broaden the curriculum for young people.

Additional Qualifications

In our Languages Faculty, we offer a range of exciting alternative courses designed to support namely S5/6 pupils in the 2025-2026 academic session in achieving their academic goals and broadening their learning experiences. This is on top of the English and Modern Languages that we already offer.

The three main courses that are on the 2025-26 Option Choice Form for S5 and S6 are:

National 5 Media

This dynamic course introduces students to the world of media, exploring how different forms of media influence society. Pupils will study topics like film, journalism, advertising, and digital media, while developing key skills in analysis, communication, and creativity. This is a course that has an exam at the end as well as a graded assignment.

We would recommend a National 5 English C pass or better for this course.

Level 5 Scottish Studies

In this course, students will dive into the rich history, culture, and heritage of Scotland. From understanding Scotland’s past to exploring its modern identity, this course provides a unique and engaging way to connect with Scottish society. This is an internal course with four units – and therefore four internal assessment points.

We would recommend a National 4 English pass or better for this course.

Level 6 Literature & Communication

This alternative Higher course is designed to develop pupils’ critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills through the study of literature and its impact on society. This is a course with no outside exam but, instead, six internally assessed units. Accepted by some universities and colleges as a Higher C, this qualification is an excellent option for those interested in enhancing their understanding of literature while strengthening their communication abilities.

This is a very good option for pupils with a National 5 English D or C who do not wish to try Higher or wish to sit this in S5 and sit Higher English in S6.

These courses offer alternative pathways for pupils to gain valuable qualifications and skills, supporting future academic and career aspirations.
