Children In Need 2012

The staff and pupils at Keir Hardie Memorial Primary School & Nursery Class in Newarthill, North Lanarkshire all donated £1 to wear something spotty to school today (Fri 16th). Some children dressed in home designed t-shirts, pyjamas, dressing gowns and some even had their faces painted. The children also participated in some Pudsey activities in their classes and raised £165 with a few more pounds still to come in!

Thank you from the Eco Committee!

The Eco Committee would like to thank everyone who collected vouchers for the Morrisons Lets’ Grow campaign. We collected an amazing 3961 vouchers which has enabled us to order lots of new gardening equipment and in particular items which will help us to grow our own food.
We would also like to thank you for donating old clothes for our recycling bin. The clothing bin was emptied in October and we raised £85. This will help us to buy additional resources for outdoor learning. Please continue to send old clothes / blankets/ towels / shoes / mobile phones and ink cartridges etc to help raise money for the school. Thank you for your continued support.
The Committee are looking for the help of a joiner who can help us with the materials and / or construction of a frame for our recycled plastic bottle greenhouse.
The materials we require are – 4” x 4” posts (4 X 8 foot long) 2” x 2” timber (around 240 ft various lengths).
If you can help in any way, please contact Mr Lynn for more information via the school office on 01698 274927 or by email allanlynn@keirhardiemem.n-lanark.sch.uk

Eco Fortnight

From 1-12th October, all school and nursery pupils have been involved in ‘Eco Fortnight’. Every class, including the nursery, have helped in the grounds whether they were litter picking or planting flowers. Pupils were involved in planning and participating in a wide range of activities linked to Eco.

Pupils from all classes shared there learning at an Eco Assembly on Friday 12th October.  This allowed them to show their junk models, made from recyclable materials, sing eco songs and celebrate the huge improvements made to the school grounds in the last two weeks.

Primary 6 pupils performed a rap which they wrote and performed with great confidence to the rest of the school.  Pupils were also treated to an Eco influenced fashion show, where our models were wearing the latest designs freshly created from the contents of their very own blue recycle bin!

All curricular areas, including homework was taught through the theme of Eco with great success and enthusiasm.  Pupils enjoyed learning outdoors and developed their collaborative skills.

This term also saw the success of the newly introduced parent and child gardening after school club.  Parents and grandparents have made a huge difference to our school grounds and we greatly all their hard work and support.

Partnership with Parents

We offered parents/carers opportunities to attend class learning sessions within all the classes. The aim of these sessions were to help them have a better understanding of teaching and learning methods within our school.  These sessions  proved to be hugely successful and we had excellent feedback.  See some examples below:

“The children seemed to have more fun learning than my own experiences.”

“Super visit! Very enjoyable and informative”

“I was very impressed how the children worked in teams and help one another.”

“I enjoyed seeing how the children are learning through practical experience, rather than using paper exercises all the time.”

Tae Kwon Do

On Tuesday 18th September and Wednesday 19th September we were very lucky to have two Tae Kwon Do coaches visit our school to give all our pupils a taster session.  This was enjoyed by all!

Welcome to Keir Hardie News

All classes have settled well into the school year and are busy learning new skills in different areas of the curriculum.  We have many after school clubs including Football, Dance, Art and Craft, Computing, Homework and Gardening.  All clubs are well attended and we are grateful to the parents helping out at the Homework and Gardening club.
