Scots Poetry

Primary 7 have been exploring Scots’ Poetry this term. Each of us studied a Burn’s poem in great detail and had to learn this so that we could recite this in class. The focus poems this year were Red Red Rose, Sic a Wife A Willie Had, Tae A Mouse and Address to The Haggis. By the end of our learning every pupil was able to recite part or all of their poems. This was quite a challenge as many of the Scots words have fallen from our day to day language and therefore the words were difficult to recognise and pronounce. As ususal we entered into the Newarthill Bowling Club Burns Competion and so auditions were held in school judged by Mr Kelly and Mrs Greer. The standard was exceptional and this made the job very difficult for the judges but three Primary 7 pupils were chosen to represent the school Kelsey Hulme, Zoe Marcell and Adam Skeleton, all of whom were outstanding on the night. Adam was chosen by the Burns Society judges as the overall winner but Mrs McKay commented that every pupil in Primary 7 has something to be very proud of as they gave 100% effort in learning and reciting their poems in and out of school .

Our class have been studying Natural Disasters as our Term 3 topic. This has created a great deal of enthusiasm and desire to learn about this fascinating subject. Pupils have worked in trios to investigate allocated disasters and then presente their findings to the class. This has developed our presentation skills as well as our ICT skills in research and power-points. We have recreated artwork entitled ‘Eye of the Storm’ which has developed our skills in applying technique and media. The study has made us aware of current affairs and we have had to report on real life Natural Disastsers which are occurring around the world such as Storm Getrude, floods in England and the most recent earthquake in Taiwan. We are using our knowledge to help write setting descriptions of earthquakes, volcanic eruption and the experience of being in an Avalanche. We are very proud of our work in this area and this is proudly displayed on our Learning Wall in the Senior Corridor.

Primary 7 Christmas Party

Primary 7 had their Christmas party on. Monday after school. All of the boys and girls had a great time doing some of the Scottish country dancing they had learned, as well as some party favourites like the slosh and the hucklebuck. image image image image image image image
