Assessment & Reporting

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is an important part of the Curriculum for Excellence and, at all levels, pupils’ progress is closely monitored by teachers and staff.

In turn, teachers and staff work with pupils to reflect on their results, looking at their strengths and learning needs, agreeing next steps and action based on these. As they progress, pupils become more involved in this process, as they develop the skills to make effective judgments on their own learning, developing personal expertise that will be important to them throughout life. Assessment also helps teachers plan learning experiences which are motivating and challenging. Children who may have additional support needs will be assessed using methods best suited to their individual requirements.

Teachers liaise to ensure levels of assessment are consistent throughout the school and that a range of evidence is available to verify learning.

Parents are invited in to classes to observe the range of learning experiences their child is involved in. They are also involved in setting targets in consultation with their child. End of year reports are sent to parents to inform them of their child’s progress as well as two Parent Meetings in the session.

North Lanarkshire pupils take part in Baseline Assessments in Primary 1 to assess Numeracy and Literacy. A range of other national assessments are carried out at different stages across the school.  The authority collect information of pupil’s progress in Literacy and Numeracy at P1, P4 and P7.

Formal assessments in high school:

  • National 4 and 5 qualifications were introduced in 2013/2014
  • Access, Highers and Advanced Highers are being updated to reflect Curriculum for Excellence
  • New Highers in most subjects were introduced in almost all North Lanarkshire schools in August 2014.

In playrooms and classrooms staff will be using improved ways of assessing children’s learning taking account of national and local advice and guidance.

Your child’s progress will be reported to you so that you know how well your child is doing.

Each year your nursery/school will let you know what is being done to implement Curriculum for Excellence so that you can be confident that your child is receiving a high quality education.

In Keir Hardie Memorial Primary School we fully implement a Curriculum for Excellence. Staff and children are confident in using the experiences and outcomes and our children are fully involved in their learning. Staff are familiar with using a variety of assessment strategies and children can identify what they have learned and their next steps.              We involved the children in the feedback to their parents and will continue to develop this work in the coming session.

Parents/Carers have been invited into the classrooms each term to observe learning and assessment and provide them with a clearer picture of how their child is taught in school.

Parents are kept fully informed about sensitive aspects of learning the children are being taught.
