Explanation and exemplification of the terms ‘codec’ and ‘container’ file
- Media files are often large and a CODEC is used to Compress and Decompress media them. They are often very specialised and require to be installed on the client before the media file can be used properly.
- Container files are used to store more than one type of media files. A RIFF multimedia file is a good example as it can store video (AVI) and Audio (WAV) files. ZIP files are often described as container files as well although technically it is a compression algorithim.
