Resilience – what is it and how to build it

Think about a time when you have had to deal with something that was really hard. Was it unexpected? A shock? A fall out with friends?

How did you overcome it? Are you still dealing with it?

‘Resilience does not constitute an individual trait or characteristic……Resilience involves a range of processes that bring together quite diverse mechanisms’

‘A child or adult who is able to cope with life’s “slings and arrows”, and in particular, to rise above adversity’ Gilligan 2001

If you have faced something really challenging and came through it then take a second to reflect on how strong you are. We can all experience hardship and go through periods of extreme difficulty and feel a sense of hopelessness; but if we have continued going to school or managed to get on with our studies and seen friends then we need to appreciate that carrying ourselves through the adversity takes courage and lots of it! We might just be getting by and sometimes feel we take one step forward and two steps back but we’re doing it and that is resilience!

It’s about bouncing back; accepting that we might not always get things right but recognising that we are human and – though the journey back might be a long one – we are strong inside and have the determination and grit to face each day.

In this section of our blog you will learn about resilience and how you can build it. A key way of doing this is by giving ourselves grace and using strategies that will help us feel more positive!
