Boardmaker Workshop

Hi everyone

Today was another enjoyable Boardmaker Workshop. We welcomed Eileen Cairns 2nd year Learning Disability student nurse from Glasgow Caledonian University who has her placement within Haysholm. The session gave Eileen the opportunity to access Boardmaker and make a variety of visuals which will be beneficial when working in class to fully support our learners. It was good to share our successful working practice with other agencies.  Eileen found the session very informative and enjoyable.

Please note that Boardmaker Workshops will continue after the holiday, please contact the school to let us know if you would like to join us.

Makaton Workshop

Thank you to Jo Ford for leading our Makaton Workshop this morning and to all those who attended. We learned a range of basic signs which we felt would be well used in various situations both at school and at home.

Some parents who had expressed an interest were unable to attend due to another course running elsewhere. Jo has said she would be more than willing to arrange a repeat for those who are interested, even if you had not previously intended on coming along today. Please contact us on 01294 272481 if you would like to come along. Keep checking our Blog for details.

MAKATON WORKSHOP

Dear Parents/Carers,

We write to inform you that our planned workshop for basic Makaton signing will take place on Tuesday 30th of January, 2018 from 10.00a.m. until 12 noon. This workshop will be delivered by Jo Ford, speech and language assistant.

We use Makaton throughout the school not only to communicate with children who have hearing impairment but also to reinforce spoken language in general. We mainly sign at a one or two word level using only key words e.g. thank you, sit, stand, lunch, bus etc. helping the individual to focus, absorb information being given and comments being made.

If you feel this approach would be helpful to you and your child please come along on the day . It would be useful if you could come armed with a list of basic signs which you would like to learn.

In addition, please note that our Communication Hub will be open on Tuesdays 16th and 23rd of January between 10.00a.m. and 12 noon for parents to come along for help and advice with making up visuals for use in the home setting. Please phone or text the school to let us know if you will be attending either of these dates.
