S1 Broad General Education

Course Content Information

In S1, pupils experience science 3 times a week. Their time in the department is split evenly between the three sciences – biology, chemistry and physics – where they explore a vast range of experiences and outcomes. The S1 Broad General Education curriculum develops a pupil’s interest and enthusiasm for science through investigation, experimentation and scientific inquiry. Topics are contextualised with real world examples and topical scientific issues are explored. The outline of our S1 Broad General Education curriculum is detailed below:

Biology

  • Cell structure and function
  • Plants and photosynthesis
  • Chemicals in agriculture
  • Enzymes
  • Respiration
  • Microorganisms
  • Body’s defences and vaccines

Chemistry

  • The kinetic theory of matter
  • Expansion and contraction
  • Solubility
  • Fossil fuels
  • Climate change

Physics

  • Energy
  • Heat
  • Electricity
  • Waves

 Course Assessment Information

Pupils experience a mixture of Level 3 and 4 experiences and outcomes in the S1 Broad General Education curriculum. They are assessed using benchmarks after they have completed each unit of work – Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
