In S3 personalisation and choice allows pupils to pick (up to) two Humanities subjects from Geography, History and Modern Studies. All S3 and S4 pupils take the Religion, Belief and Values course.

S3 Geography– Pupils experience a range of topics to prepare them for the senior phase. They will study coastal landscapes and land use, farming and hazards. In the course of these topics pupils will develop both map skills and research skills.

S3 History – Pupils will study The Atlantic Slave Trade. In this topic they will study why slavery was used in the Caribbean and its effects on Britain and the West Indies. Pupils will discover how African people became enslaved and the conditions they encountered during their journey to the plantations.  Pupils will also develop skills of collecting and organising information, judging the value of evidence and explaining cause and effect in relation to the topic.

S3 Modern Studies– Pupils will study Crime and the Law. This will involve a study of the causes of crime, its impact and responses to reduce crime. Pupils will also have the opportunity to undertake a research project of their choice enabling them to develop the skill of writing a report. The course will also introduce the enquiry skills required for N4/5 progression as well as focus on the literacy skills required for success in the senior phase.

S3/4 Religion , Belief and Values

All pupils will receive one period of RBV a week.  This is offered for all through a SQA level 4 award, focusing on the theme of forgiveness and carries a certificated outcome

RBV aims to help pupils to clarify their own views in relation to mankind’s search for meaning, value, and purpose in life.  It looks at the way people find solutions, through their religious beliefs and practices, to the questions and problems facing human beings.  It encourages independence of thought and action on the basis of knowledge and understanding, as well as respect for the beliefs and practices of others.

Assessment

Pupils will be required to meet certain performance criteria achieved through various classroom examinations.  Assessment will be on a pass/fail basis, and externally moderated.
