Modern Languages Courses

At Port Glasgow High School pupils have the opportunity to study both French and Spanish. All pupils study French S1-S2 and in S3 there is also an option to pick up Spanish as an additional language. Both French and Spanish are offered in S4-6.

S1 x 3 periods a week

S1 French Topics

  • Beginner Basics
Numbers, dates, birthdays Colours Telling the time
Weather Countries, Capital Cities and Nationalities Pets
Family members Physical descriptions Personality

  • Mes passetemps (Hobbies)
  • Les vacances (Holidays)

Pupils will also learn about cultural aspects of France and complete a film study. The S1 film is ‘Le petit Nicolas’.

S2 x 3 periods a week

S2 French Topics

  • Paris, je t’adore! (Paris)
  • Ma zone (Home Area)
  • T’es branché(e)? (TV, Film, Books, Internet)

Pupils will also learn about cultural aspects of France and complete a film study. The S2 film is ‘Les choristes’.

S3 Languages

Continuing at least one foreign language in S3 is encouraged. A large number of pupils in fact study both French and Spanish 2 periods each a week!

S3 French Topics

  • Mon identité – Part 1 (Self, Family and Friends Relationships)
  • Mon identité – Part 2 (Music : Instruments, Types of Music, French Artists and Song Gap Fills from Sara’h)
  • À l’horizon (Jobs)
  • Spécial vacances (Holidays)

Pupils will also learn about cultural aspects of France and complete a film study. The S3 film is ‘Neuilly sa mère’.

S3 Spanish Topics

  • Beginner Basics

  • Los pasatiempos (Hobbies)

Pupils will also learn about cultural aspects of Spain and complete a film study. The S3 Spanish film is ‘Valentin’.

BGE Assessments

Pupils complete their Personal Learner Profiles which capture their day-to-day learning. These are used most weeks and contain a variety of Reading, Listening, Writing and Talking exercises for each unit. Pupils enjoy self and peer assessing their booklets. There are end of unit Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing assessments.
