S1,2 and 3
You will follow the experiences and outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence BGE in English and Literacy. Across the years you will develop your writing skills in imaginative, personal and persuasive genres. You will also study a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop your comprehension and critical thinking skills. You will be assessed termly by your teacher to see the progress you are making.
S4 – 6 Senior Phase
N4: The National 4 course links closely to the skills you cover in the BGE and assessment is based around the four key skills of Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening. You will also get the chance to complete a personal research project as your SQA Added Value Unit. As well as being a stand alone qualification, N4 also introduces and develops the knowledge and skills necessary for progress to National 5.
N5: The National 5 course is split into 4 key areas:
- Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation
- Literature study, including Scottish texts
- Writing folio
- Group discussion
Assessment is via coursework and final exam

Higher: The Higher course is split into 4 key areas:
- Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation

- Writing folio
- Group discussion

Level 6 Communication and Literature
This course is an alternative progression from Nat 5. It is based around the 4 key skills:
- Reading
- Writing
- Talking
- Listening
But rather than external coursework and exam the units are assessed internally by your class teacher. Candidates for this course will be selected based on prior attainment and class teacher knowledge of pupil skills.
Advanced Higher:
The Advanced Higher course is provided by our consortium schools. It is an opportunity to advance your skills in English by working independently and experiencing university style critical writing in the form of a dissertation.
The course is split into four key areas:
- Unseen Textual Analysis
- Literature Study
- Writing folio
- Dissertation
