Description of Course

Through the study of Modern History students will develop a knowledge and understanding of key events in Britain and globally.  The course will foster and develop skills related to essay writing, research and evaluation, which are valuable in future vocations.

The course units of study are:

  • British History: 1851 to 1951
  • European and World History: Germany 1859 to 1959
  • Scottish History: Migration and Empire 1850 to 1939
  • Assignment

Teaching involves group discussions, whole class teaching, use of ICT and individual research.

Homework

An average of around half an hour per evening – split between finishing class work, background reading and formal written essays (usually 1 per fortnight).

Assessment

The topics covered will be assessed using class assessments, essays and homework. Students must achieve the required standards in all 3 areas of study and submit an assignment on a topic of their choice. The assignment contributes 20% of the overall course award.
