National 3 Music

The N3 course is all internally assessed and consists of the following:

Composing Skills

Create original music by:

  • Experimenting and using simple concepts and methods in imaginative ways to develop and create original music.
  • Reflecting on the music produced.

Performing Skills

  • Perform music in a range of music styles by:
  • Play two sections of music at Grade 1/N3 level, showing an
  • understanding of the composers’ intentions.
  • Identifying strengths and areas for improvement in own performances.

Understanding Music

Recognise and identify simple music concepts and styles by:

  • Identifying simple N3 music concepts in excerpts of music.
  • Identifying and recognising the distinctive instrumental and/or vocal
  • groupings used in music styles.
  • Understanding the meaning of simple music signs, symbols and
  • terms (N3 literacy).
