Handwriting At Home

At nursery to P3 we focus on forming the letters and words we have learned. At P3 to P7 we teach our pupils cursive handwriting.

For pupils who are struggling with finger grip, forming letters we recommend our nursery’s video  Finger Gym . Alternatively try Dough Disco and Crocodile Snap on YouTube to practise those finger movements. This video helps with the understanding of progression of pencil grip and also using different activities to improve those fine motor skills, e.g. using clothes pegs, tweezers – find more here.

We also recommend different techniques to support finger grip:  Sing a song together: One finger, One Thumb can be changed to these lyrics: “one finger, one thumb, tuck under” to encourage the middle finger to support the pencil. Another popular trick is the nip, flip and grip technique.  Oxford Owl Handwriting includes video clips of warming up your fingers and ways to make handwriting fun.

Teach Handwriting   has lots of different activities and workheets to practise your formations.

Thank you to Mrs Quigley for this excellent video showing how we form each cursive letter.
