Building our community

Investigating what children need to be healthy, happy and safe in their community.

‘The community is really friendly and everyone gets along. If we could change anything about our community we would get the police to handle the smaller situations. Police here focus on the big things. As the small situations often turn big, they should sort this out first. We’d also ban motorbike and create bumpy roads to slow down cars.’

‘Granite Hill Road is really dangerous with fast cars. We’d like a lollipop lady or man so it is easier to cross. If we could change anything we would bring rock climbing to our community and a train station, so that we can go on holiday. We really like that our friends live close by and we can play with them.’

The importance of family

Children talk about the importance of families and what families need.

“Families keep you safe, no matter what. Sometimes they need help. Families need energy and to have fun. They need a computer, a garden and pets. They need to be a happy family.”
Natasha, Elle, Katie, Brooke P5 Tullos PS

“We were learning about families being healthy and happy. Families need support from each other to stay safe. We drew pictures of our family saying who is important to us. All families need shelter.”
Amy, Nicole, Morgan, Aaron and Danielle P5 Tullos PS

“To help families we should do something about the litter, smoking and alcohol and drugs in our community. There should be no animal cruelty. People need schools and houses. We need good drivers. Homeless people need houses. We need clean beaches.”

Children should have a safe, healthy and happy community to live in.

“We love our friends, family and homes in the community. We like KFC as we like to eat there. People in our community are very disgusting because they don’t pick up dog poop. It is really annoying when people are drunk and they smash bottles and shout. In our community we like the park near Daniel’s house as it has so many good things to play on like see-saws and slides.”

“The swimming pool and park are great because you can play with your friends. We don’t like the traffic because it is noisy and scares us. We would change the traffic by telling the council to make more roads so it doesn’t all go on one.”

What gets in the way

Sometimes things can get in the way of children being healthy, happy and safe at school.

“The teacher takes our P.E. off us when people aren’t listening in class. This gets in the way if us being happy and healthy at school. If our teacher took us on more school trips to museums people would like going there and would listen.

People disturbing us gets in the way of us doing our best work. We could get our own desks and this would help.”

Ideas for a school

Children should be free to learn in a happy, healthy and safe environment.

“One of the ideas for a school was to get more PSAs because when we are playing outside there is hardly any PSAs to look after us.”

Martha P6W

“My favourite part of today was when we had a lot of discussion on what makes a safe school.”

Macaulay P6W

“We imagined a school that the teachers would help us more and would listen.”

Chloe K P6W

“I imagine an amazing school where there is no bullying and we have fun.”

Chloe P P6W

“We’d do big maths [a game] to help us get the answers in the school we are imagining.”

Rebecca P6W

“I’d like a school where we did more P.E. to make us healthy.”

“The best things about our community are our family, friends and school. We like to live near school. We need to stop graffiti and rubbish. We would change the fact that people smoke. There’s heaps of dog mess, it’s the most common thing. We need more trees.”

Sophie, Lloyd, James and Dillon P6 Tullos Primary School

“Our Community Differences: There are exciting opportunities for children to play in parks and on the beach. There are good people and good views. We would change the smell and being close to the sewage. There’s a problem with dog poo. We don’t like violence. People shouldn’t disrespect the environment.”

Arkadi, Bethanay, Jodi and Lauren P5 Tullos Primary School

“In our community people are helpful and polite. They have nice houses. There are bins for rubbish and allotments and fresh air. There can be dog poo which is a problem. Adults shouldn’t smoke in front of children. At night it can be noisy and dogs bark.”

Imagining a school…

Children imagine a school where everyone is healthy, happy, safe and everyone can do their best.

“We have been concentrating on what makes us feel safe and healthy at school. In the school we are imagining there is an Auditorium because we always put a stage into the gym hall when we are doing a play. So if we had an Auditorium we’d have a real stage. I want the gym hall to be free.”

Megan, P4, Bramble Brae

“Anger problems get in the way of doing our best at school. In the school we are imagining there is big glass windows, so teachers can see us.”

TJ, P4, Bramble Brae

“When you don’t have enough PSAs it gets in the way of being safe at school.”

Jnr, P4, Bramble Brae

A healthy, happy and safe school

Every school should be a place where children are healthy, happy and safe – and doing their best!

“Today we went to see Colin and we talked about staying safe, being healthy and doing your best. We got a big bit of paper and we wrote down what makes us feel safe and all the positive stuff. It was really fun. Stay safe! Have fun!”

Kelsey, P5, Tullos Primary School

“This afternoon we shared our ideas and feelings about having a good place to be happy. If children are sad or down at school we can give them a good environment, care about them and help them talk about it.”

Lennon, Brooke, Sean-Paul and Sasha, P5, Tullos Primary School
