Taking a nurturing approach means recognising that relationships are key to learning and the six nurture principles help us understand how we can support children to learn and to thrive.
A nurturing school or ELC setting will also recognise the importance of its relationships with the families and the local community it serves. Children do best when their families are enabled to offer them nurturing care and when families and education settings work well together.
The Nurturing Families resources have been produced to support any educational setting in Glasgow who wish to work with their families to:

- Build strong relationships between and within the school/ELC setting and local community.
- Develop shared language and approaches to understanding children’s development, behaviour and emotions using the nurture principles.
- Empower parents and carers to develop their own ways of providing nurturing care.

The Nurturing Families resources consist of:

- A set of PowerPoint slides which can be used to run Nurturing Families parent/carer group sessions.
- Booklets for parents/carers to accompany the Nurturing Families sessions.
- Posters which can be displayed in your setting. This can be used on their own or alongside running Nurturing Families sessions.
- Online information for families.

Nurturing Families resources will generally work best when:

- Nurturing approaches are already well understood and embedded within your setting (for further support, see Applying Nurture as a Whole School Approach or A Nurturing Approach in the Early Years or speak to Glasgow Educational Psychology Service).
- Family engagement and/or nurture is part of your SIP.
- There is at least one person who is able to familiarise themselves with all the resources and who will have the time and resources to implement them effectively.
