Science helps us understand the world (and the universe) around us, it explains why things happen. Scientists do experiments that allow us to find solutions to questions and problems.
National 3
Pupils will learn about:
- Fragile Earth – Learners will investigate energy, metal, water and food. Their uses and benefits will be explored. Learners will gain knowledge of how science is involved in environmental issues.
- Human Health – Learners will develop an understanding of factors which contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Learners cover procedures to measure physical fitness, investigate mental/social health issues and research media reports relating to health.
- Applications of Science – Learners will develop explore science’s contribution to communication technologies and the impact these have on society. They will also research the production and use of new materials and how Science helps the understanding of risk and how it can be reduced in modern life.
There is no external assessment. To achieve the National 3 Science Course Award, learners must pass all of the required assessments for the above 3 units.
National 4
Pupils will learn about:

Leaners are also required to pass an Added Value Unit. This requires them to carry out an investigation and apply the skills and knowledge they have learned during the course to produce and pass an assignment.
