Today’s Lecture was about not knowing how artists think. Art is the way many people tend to express themselves without the written words. The expressive arts come under four categories; these are visual arts, dance, music and drama. In art it is vital as future educators to remember art it is not about the written word.
In the Visual Art’s workshop we focused on the positives and negatives of the Arts in schools. A lot of the negatives of arts revolve around the lack of resources schools have such as, paints, clay, paper, pencils and pens etc. Art is a way of making thinking visible through the use of pictures, videos, texts and different layouts and formats. Linking this to lesson ideas which could be used within the curriculum I would have asked pupils to draw whatever they like using many different colours such as bright or dull colours allowing them to express themselves and their feelings.
The music workshop was an introduction into how music makes people feel, the opportunities it offers to people and the different instruments used. In this workshop we listened to four short clips of music and had to decide how the music made us feel, happy, sad, scared and calm were many of the feelings people felt. Music offers many individual different opportunities that they may not get outside of school.. In this workshop we also listened to a piece of music and created a storyboard about what we thought was happening throughout the music from this we then presented our storyboard to our peers in the class listening to one another’s ideas from the music we listen to as our stimulus. As a lesson idea I would do a similar lesson as was done today. Allowing pupils to listen to different pieces of music will allow the to connect with different feelings. Another lesson idea could also me the same done with the storyboard and listening to a piece of music then allowing pupils to do a writing piece using the storyboards as a stimulus.
Both workshops linked together as they emphaisied the importance of the arts. As they offer opportunities to individuals to express themselves in a different way, which is not the written word.

I learned about how unchurched spirituality is becoming a bigger phenomenon as more and more people have moved away from the idea that religion must take place inside a place of worship, and how its importance has even dropped due to secularisation I think the main area learned today was about the decline in the … Continue reading religion society and lifestyles 2 →
I leaned that “religion” is much more than just someone’s beliefs and how important its influences can be in many modern day aspects of life and society I feel like I learned a lot about how many different theorists interpret the ideas and beliefs that exist and how they differ so dramatically from each other. … Continue reading society and lifestyles religion pdp task 1 →

In todays lecture, we discusessed the links and relationship between society, culture and youth. I found out that culture is he values, norms habits, and ways of life characteristics of a coherent social group. Furthermore, I found that the meaning of a society is made up of people, groups, networks, institutions, organisations and systems. These may include local, national and international patterns of relationships. We then discussed how they interact on a micro, meso and macro level. We then discussed how youth is different to adults and mentioned a few characteristics that they both have. For example, youth tend to be ignorant, rebellious and dependant whereas adults tend to be more independent and strong. Youth is the stage between being a child and an adult and within this there is subcultures. For example, goths. punks and hippies.
We then went onto studying some social theorists such as Piaget, Kohlberg, and Maslow and Eric Erikson. Piaget believes that we go through stages in our life in relation to what age we are and this impacts our mental development. We then had a look at Erikson who doesn’t believe in stages but believes in stages but believes that youth climb steps in order to become an adult.
During the day I struggled to understand Maslow as much as the other theorists. I feel that I understood the main idea of the triangle but do not feel confident enough to write about him and his beliefs in more detail. In preparation for the exam I will research him further.
From todays lecture I feel confident that I could attempt a question about youth, society and culture however I feel that to have a greater understanding I need to have a look at some case studies and further research theorists.
Today’s society and lifestyle inputs were based around the apparent link between culture, society and the influence this can have on youths. Today’s society and lifestyle inputs were based around the apparent link between culture, society and the influence this can have on youths.
Culture can be defined as the knowledge and traditions shared by members of groups/ societies that reflect their way of life such as language, religion, medical care, food, jokes, manners, celebrations and clothes. Likewise, society can be denoted as the “human relationship from a small group to a large system”, this highlights that citizens can belong to a formal group or informal group and within these group pattern of interaction form, societies/ groups can be small, large or encompass millions of members.
During the lecture, we examined in depth the meaning of youth and the theories within. Youth is the transition between childhood and adulthood which can be split into two segments
· Adolescent
· Adolescence
Youth is a general way of life, during this transitions the age range may be easily identified from the wider society due to culture patterns. The term youth is mainly used in the developing world but the meaning is constantly changing as citizen are taking more responsibilities when young. Adolescence is used to describe youth adulthood (age 18 to mid-thirties) who live independently, but are not married and have no children.
There are many evident connections that can be made to theories, society and youth.
· Piaget
· Erikson
· Kohlberg
· Maslow
Having already explored Piaget theory within literacy and mathematical development of children, I find this insightful that his theory is relevant to the social developments of youth. Piaget theory is based around observing his children cognitive developments, which enabled him to compile developmental stages.
· Stage one- Semi motor period (birth to 2 years) this is when children begin to learn how to learn, developing their language from the people they see and hear, and beginning to acquire an understanding of the world
· Stage two- preoperational (2 years to 7 years) during this period children develop there thought and thinking mechanism, they demonstrate egoism as they only have a sound understanding of their world. They pretend to play but this varies depending of culture and environment.
· Stage three- concrete operational (2 years to 11 years) this is the stage children develop abstract thought, grasping of the world and appreciate family and themselves.
· Stage four- formal operational (11 years) this means cognitive development is ongoing, as adult we still experience and acquire new skills, knowledge and still constructing a sense of the world. Adolescent being to think more abstractly gaining a greater awareness of problem solving, logically and symbolic thinking.
Overall, I found today’s inputs to be considerably insightful and I was able to gain a wider knowledge of the links between culture, society and the evolving impact this can have on youth.

We talked about how youth culture can change over time and we also compared the differences and similarities between youth cultures. We looked at 4 theorists: Piaget, Maslow, Erikson and Kohlberg, and we learned how they related to subcultures in society. During the tutorial, we went into further detail about the different youth cultures and commonalities between them. I felt this allowed me to deeper understand the information we got from the lecture and put it into practice by working in groups to answer questions.

In Society and Lifestyles today we learned about the differences in society and culture and how they interact with youth. We also learned that youth culture can been seen as a subculture in itself and were able to link this with social theories from Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg and Maslow. In the tutorial we studied certain questions and answered them in groups and then had feedback with the class. This was very useful because I believe it gave insight to different peoples opinion.
I feel that my knowledge has increased today because I was unaware of any of the social theories that we learned today. I feel that these theories will help me in preparing for my exam. Some of the slides in today’s lecture also referred back to the previous lecture which has further improved my knowledge and understanding of the five agents of socialisation.
I felt in the tutorial that I struggled with answering some of the questions but once a few examples were given I started to understand what I was being asked. To combat this I will look over the questions again to improve my understanding of the questions.
I feel that this weeks input has been enjoyable because youth culture is something that I am interested in and would love to teach this particular subject as an aspiring teacher.

My score came to three hundred and thirty five, which means that I have an 80% chance of having a mental breakdown. This scares me because at this point I’m content with my life and nothing is really putting me under loads of stress.
As a result of some unfortunate events that have happened in the past year, my score became much higher and has caused me to worry and stress more than I normally would. I feel that these things will not have regular occurrence and therefore my mental health will probably stay the same.
I feel that since coming to university my stress levels have risen a bit with the blog posts, additional readings and exam revision that we have to do. However I feel as though I am managing to cope well with all this and that its not as stressful as I imagined it to be.
I feel that to combat my stress levels I will make sure that I am more organised and on time for any commitments so that I am not worried about getting things done and submitted. To overcome my stress I will also make sure to get some fresh air and to go for walks with my friends to wind down and take my mind away from certain things, and drink plenty of water to help my stress levels go away.
