A Day in the Life on Site: Assistant NEC Supervisor

My name is Ross, and I work as an Assistant NEC Supervisor on the A9 Dualling P12 Tomatin to Moy project and I’ve been based on site for the past 10 months. Before starting this role, I studied Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University.

NEC stands for “New Engineering Contract” and is the contract signed between the Client and the Contractor to manage the project from start to finish. As an Assistant NEC Supervisor, it is my role to monitor the quality and compliance of construction on site on behalf of the Client, Transport Scotland.

I’ve been interested in how things are built for as long as I can remember – even as a kid, I loved building with Lego. That interest grew into a career in civil engineering, where I now get to use problem-solving, teamwork and creativity to help deliver projects like roads, cycle paths and public spaces that make a real difference to communities.

My job involves helping to check that construction work is being carried out properly and meets the required standards. I work on behalf of Transport Scotland, visiting different areas of the site, taking notes, recording progress and photographing the work being carried out. I keep track of what is happening each day and help make sure any issues are picked up and dealt with.

I also attend site inspections and tests. For example, I watch tests that check whether the ground is strong enough to support roads or structures, and I help monitor concrete testing to make sure it is safe and suitable to use. These checks are important because even small problems can affect the quality and safety of the finished project.
