Starcatchers Creative Skills Training

Starcatchers is currently offering a free training programme for Early Years workers in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fife, South Lanarkshire and Inverclyde as part of a pilot project to develop creative skills for early years workers in Scotland which is being supported by the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland.

The programme will allow early years workers from a range of sectors to build their understanding of the importances of creativity in early years and through a series of artist-led practical sessions, will offer skills and techniques that practitioners can use when they are working with children and families directly.

Starcatchers is currently recruiting participants for the project, all the information is on their website:  http://www.starcatchers.org.uk/creative-skills/creative-skills-early-years-practitioners

Fife Council Youth Music Initiative – The Big Strum!

http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.display&objectid=5CD68CF3-04CB-513C-DC70103CE7DA5154

An innovative music project culminated this week with 1400 Fife primary children coming together for the first ever Big Strum in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.
The event celebrated the many achievements of children and their primary teachers from over 30 schools who together have been learning singing and musicianship skills through the humble ukulele – and having a lot of fun in the process!

Led by primary music specialist, Ann Rae, and supported with Scottish Government Youth Music Initiative funding, plans are already in place to include
up to 60 primary schools in Fife next session.

An independent evaluation of the project, focusing on the quality of the CPD offered to teachers and the impact on children and their learning, has been commissioned from the University of Dundee and will be published later this summer.

Photos of the event are available to view at https://www.facebook.com/fifecouncil

Inspectors find excellent examples of Curriculum for Excellence implementation at Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline and in its learning community

Queen Anne High School in Dunfermline, Fife and the learning community around the school have achieved outstanding evaluations in two separate reports by HM Inspectors published by Education Scotland today.

Queen Anne High School has become one of the few secondary schools in Scotland to receive evaluations of nothing less than ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’ from inspectors since the issue of updated guidelines by Education Scotland that reflect the increased expectations now applying as a result of the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence.  At the same time, the learning community has been evaluated as ‘very good’ in all four quality indicators used nationally to monitor the quality of learning communities

The report about the Queen Anne’s learning community states:

  • Learners are achieving very well across the community, becoming more confident and active, and increasing their life chances.
  • Performance reporting is well-embedded, with robust reporting systems that demonstrate that CLD is achieving most targets.
  • Young people are achieving well through a good range of learning programmes.
  • Work with parents is well-established, with a strong focus on early intervention.
  • CLD providers are supporting a range of community groups that are achieving well.
  • CLD partners are working well together to improve the quality of services.
  • Partnership self-evaluation is leading to improvements.
  • There are good arrangements for workforce development.

The inspection found the following key strengths within the Queen Anne learning community:

  • Highly developed partnerships and positive collaborative working.
  • Continuous improvement which is embedded in practice.
  • Innovative professional learning leading to well‑trained and highly motivated staff.
  • Joint reviewing and planning with partners.
  • Well‑targeted provision for young people, adults and community groups which is improving life chances.

Creativity Exchange Fife #CSFife12

creativity exchange fife #CXFife12 was delivered by Fife’s Creative Learning Network (FCLN) and took place on Thursday 8 November 2012 at The Rothes Halls in Glenrothes to an audience of 120 participants.

The event focussed on creativity in learning; the impacts, the benefits and examples of creativity as a cross-curricular theme within the context of Curriculum for Excellence.  Joining us as Keynote Speaker for the event was Kenneth Greer, Executive Director (Education and Learning), Fife Council, who gave an inspirational speech which highlighted the importance of embedding creativity across all curricular subjects and not just within the expressive arts.  Participants were then put through 10 fast paced ‘speed dating’ style sessions by guest table presenters from across Education, Culture and Communities sectors, which allowed groups to offer inspirational approaches to creative learning while at the same time showcasing their work.

Fife’s Creative Learning Network (FCLN) is now in its second year and its membership has grown in strength to 145 members.
