Update from Maureen McKenna – Director of Education

Maureen McKenna’s message on Glasgow Times

In the Glasgow Times today, Maureen McKenna posted some advice for parents. Here is what she said:

“We find ourselves in such extraordinary circumstances at the moment and I don’t want parents and carers to feel that they need to recreate the classroom in their kitchen.

“Our children and young people can be learning in so many different ways and as part of everyday life – while the schools are closed, families should embrace active learning – while doing household chores, out on their daily walk, reading a book or watching a film together and by using the educational programmes relaunched by the BBC this week.

“This is not a competition as to which mum, dad or carer can be the most imaginative teacher – concentrate on what’s achievable to meet your family needs and working from home arrangements.

“That’s why we’ve partnered with the Glasgow Times to publish a series of features with ideas on how you can help your children learn and have some fun too.

“I also know that our school staff are going to great lengths to arrange work remotely for their pupils – sending this either digitally or through the post to help parents and carers with lesson packs.

“I’m delighted to see so many of our education staff and schools engaging via social media with their school communities and to keep spirits up.

“Please don’t worry – just do what you can – we are all in this together and we will come back stronger as a result.”

COVID-19 Update

Corona virus update

I know many of you are anxious about whether or not your child should attend school. If your child is healthy and well then they should continue to come to school.

However, following the most up to date advice, if anyone in your household shows any symptoms then everyone in your household should self isolate for 14 days. A special absence code has been issued for this reason.

If you are affected by this advice please call the school office

0141 637 6798.

In light of government advice to avoid unnecessary social contact, I will provide further information regarding parents’ night and any class trips as soon as possible.

Many thanks for your continued support at this time.

Lost Property

LOST PROPERTY

As you know we work hard to return any named lost property. For many years we have relied on parent volunteers spending countless hours sorting lost property and have found that this is no longer sustainable.

If you have lost something, can I please ask that you look in lost property (at the community entrance) this week. Any unclaimed items will be sent to charity THIS FRIDAY.

From now on lost property will be cleared every FIT AND FRUITY FRIDAY (last Friday of the month).

Many thanks for your help and support in this matter,

Miss Kirk

Water in the lunch hall

Pupil Voice Information – important message for parents and pupils

From Monday 27th January , there won’t be any plastic cups in the lunch hall for water. This is to reduce our use of single use plastic.

If pupils want water at lunch time, they will need to bring their water bottles. Every class will have a box to put their water bottles in after lunch.

Please help us make this possible by making sure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day, labelled with their name and class.

This is a really big step towards our campaign to reduce single use plastic. Next we will tackling the use of milk cartons!

Many thanks from Pupil Voice Committee

Obstacle Course

The annual Merrylee PA Obstacle Course will take place on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st January.

As most of you will know this is an event greatly enjoyed every year by all the children. The course is setup by parent volunteers and staff, and is supervised at all times whilst the children are using the equipment.

Every child in the school will have the opportunity to enjoy the obstacle course, and the children are able to wear sport clothes on the day that their class is taking part.

To make the course as interesting as possible, we need as many volunteers as we can to supervise the various obstacles. If you have time on either or both days to help please email:

merryleepa@hotmail.com

We are no longer asking for sponsorship for this event. If you would like to make a donation towards PA funds, which help support school trips and resources, then you will be able to do so via ParentPay.
