Syllables, space and spooky children!

In spelling this week we were learning about syllables, which are the chunks or beats in a word. This is helpful when learning to spell longer words. We counted syllables in lots of different words and practised clapping out the different parts of the word. This is one of the many different activities we can do at home to practise our words, if they are longer. It is not a very helpful activity to learner shorter 3 or 4 letter words.

We continued revising addition and subtraction sums this week in maths and also began work on our new time topic. Firstly we are working on longer periods of time – days, months and seasons. This will also be linking in with our space topic which we will be starting properly next week. We have been enjoying our class novel Flat Stanley in Space at the end of each day.

On Tuesday we completed our technology lesson building our spider webs using twigs, string and glue. There were a variety of strategies used by the different children, creating some really great interesting webs!

We learned the ch sound in phonics this week and thought of LOADS of words! Ch is a very common sound in so many words we know.

With David we were improving our punching and kicking skills in karate.

Of course it was Halloween this week and there was lots of spooky things going on…

Wednesday was the Halloween disco after school

On Thursday we had a class party and a parade to celebrate Halloween

A very busy week again! Happy weekend and see you next week 🙂

We have been busy with lots of learning in our first week back including –

  • writing in the past tense
  • using a variety of openers in our writing to vary our sentences
  • pyramid writing in spelling to help us learn our words
  • revision of addition with carrying and subtraction with borrowing
  • creating some Halloween themed art
  • completing a KWL grid for our new Space topic
  • reading and spelling our oo phonics words

Gathering resources for our art & technology lesson

Miss Hewitt did not give the children instructions how to make the spider web – they were shown pictures and were to try and problem solve how to secure the sticks and string together independently… to be continued next week!

Term one complete :)

Well, that is term one finished already! A great start to the year in class 2 with lots of great learning already.

We finished off the last week of term with a trip to the Science Centre yesterday to watch ‘A beautiful planet’ at the I-max, which will link in very well with out STEM themed topic next term. We also had some time to explore the science malls before the film which the class thoroughly enjoyed!

Thank you all very much for coming to parents night this week, it was great to see you all. Have a fabulous holiday and I will see you in term 2 🙂

Outdoor learning week

This week was outdoor learning week at St Albert’s. We continued working on our current topics but incorporated the outdoors into our lessons. Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for the parent open afternoon for outdoor learning on Thursday.

Some outdoor mental maths – writing 2,3 & 4 digit numbers, finding numbers with a certain number of tens or units, finding numbers before or after, finding odd or even numbers

Preparing the skills we needed for our trip to the shop to work out some totals and change

Putting all our different basketball skills together to play a game on the MUGA (fabulous photography by Hector on Miss Hewitt’s iPad)

Trip to the local shop to spend £1 – adding up to find the total of the things we wanted and counting on to work out change. Then enjoying our purchases 🙂

We were learning about y and Y in handwriting this week and did some of this outdoors using chalk and making the letters out of twigs

Photographs we took on our ‘Children’s Rights in action’ hunt. We found evidence of 9 different rights that children were receiving at St Alberts 🙂

Tuesday was Huzaifa’s birthday and we celebrated this with a party in class on Friday afternoon including some fabulous dancing for musical statues 🙂

Trip to Edinburgh Zoo

On Thursday St Albert’s went on a whole school trip to the zoo!

It was a very busy day including games on the bus on the way there, spotting different animals in the enclosures,  finding out interesting facts about the animals, getting lots of exercise walking up the hills, fun time in the play park, using our money skills to buy souvenirs in the gift shop and some sleepy people on the bus home!

If you have any of your own photos, those of you that went off to explore by yourself, please share them in the comments 🙂
