Rugby Festival Finalists 🏈🙌🏼

We had our last session with the rugby coaches today.  It was lots of fun and we improved on our passing skills and learned the best ways to defend and tackle.  The coaches have been an amazing help with teaching us the rules of rugby and supporting us to learn new throwing and defending skills.

The coaches chose 10 of us to go to Clyde College to take part in a rugby festival.  We will compete against pupils from other schools in Glasgow.

The 5 pupils chosen to represent St Albert’s are Hamza, Aaron, Mashael, Zaynab and Zain.  The coaches will choose another 5 people to go from the rugby after school club.

We all got certificates for participating in the sessions.

Celtic Connections at The Royal Concert Hall 🎼🎷🎻🎺🎹🥁

We were lucky enough to be invited to The Royal Concert Hall to see part of the Celtic Connections Festival.

It was so cool to be in the venue as only a couple of us had been before.  There were lots of schools there and everyone seemed so excited.

The first band to play were a band called Imar & Danu.  This band is made up of 5 guys and play mostly folk music.  They played the uilleann pipes, th accordion,  the drum, the guitar, the flute and the fiddle.  They were so talented, their music was amazing!!

The next band were from Basque and were equally as amazing as the first band.

All of their instruments were made out of natural resources and sounded so cool. The musicians looked like they were having so much fun.

This visit has definitely made a lot of us think about all the possibilities of a job in the music industry.

Road Safety Play 🚦🎭

Baldy Bane Theatre Group came in to teach us about road safety.

The play was in the form of an open forum which means we got to comment on the performance after each scene.  This was good because we could discuss each point.  We also had the opportunity to ask the actors questions based on the performance which was cool.

We learned about the dangers of forbidden areas and why we shouldn’t go into these places.

We then learned about bike safety on the road and how to be safe cycling on the road. We must always wear a helmet, reflective clothing and have reflective lights on the front and back of our bike.

You should never use your mobile phone while walking down the street or cycling.  You could bang into people or walk into a lamppost.

Pupils become Teachers!!

We have been learning how to explain our thinking and justify our answers a part of our maths work.

During our mental maths lessons, Miss McCue has been explaining strategies to us and then giving us sums to use the strategy for.  We have then been volunteering to be the teacher and get up to answer sums and talk through how we got the answer.  We have had to explain each step to make sure that the pupils understand.

This is fun and is a good way for Miss McCue to assess our understanding.

Learning to play Rugby 🏉🏉

As part of our Health and Wellbeing learning, we have started to learn to play Rugby.

Coaches from the college are coming in to teach us how to play Rugby from 2 til 3 on a Wednesday. **please remember to bring trainers at this time. **

During the first session, we learned how to hold the ball properly, one hand  needs to be at the bottom and the other at the top and your hands need to be spread open.

We did some throwing and catching drills and learned how to stand when throwing in rugby. You always need to stand side on.

We also worked on throwing, catching and running drills.  This will help with our co-ordination.

It was so much fun and we will definitely improve and be pros by the third session.

Miss McCue put her throwing and catching skills to the test too during the drills.

Outdoor Learning – The Floor is Lava 🔥🔥

To help us with our fractions learning, Miss McCue set up a game called, ‘The Floor is Lava’ .

We split into 4 teams and each team was on a mat.  No team member is allowed to come off the mat during the game.  If any body part touches the ground outwith the mat, the team go back to the start because THEY HAVE JUST TOUCHED THE LAVA!!!!

Each team has a mat in front of them which they can move to if they answer the question correctly. Our questions this week were finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions, as this is what we have been learning in maths this week.

When a team gets an answer correct and they’ve moved to the next mat, they need to work together to transport their other mat in front of them.  This is difficult with so many people on the mat and with everybody trying to stay off of the lava!!

Each team started using different tactics and, by working together, were able to stay off of the lava.

Team 4 were in the lead for most of the game but it was very close at the end between Teams 1, 3 and 4.

Through sheer determination and excellent teamwork, team 4 were able to answer more questions correctly and move their mat successfully.

The aim was to knock the cone over at the end.  Well done Team 4:

Sarmud, Eishah, Zahra, Rehman, Eliza and Yahya.

Book Club 📚📚

We have set up a book club within our class with the aim to get us all reading more.

Our homework for Week 1 of term was to choose a book and bring it in.  We then spoke about our book and Miss McCue split us into groups depending on what genre of book we were reading.

We split into 3 genre groups:

Suspense and adventure

Horror

Comedy.

We all have an area of the classroom which we sit in and each week we rotate areas.

Our Thursday night homework task each week will be to write a summary of what we’ve read that week.  This way, Miss McCue can make sure we are reading at home and learn lots of new stories as we summarise our books.

By June, we want to have fallen in love with reading and be reading for enjoyment regularly at home.

Cycling Fun 🚲🙂

We’ve been taking the bikes out and getting exercise at the same time as having lots of fun.

Jazil, Eishah and Zahra have been learning how to ride bikes which is so exciting.

Hamza has helped everyone with the maintenence of their bike  He’s been fixing punctures, chains and seat heights.  We would be lost without him.  What job could Hamza have in the future?
