Session 2 with The Conservatoire 🎹🎬

We had another amazing session with The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland this week.

To begin, we played warm up games as a class. Β It was fun and quite difficult as we had to make sure we were paying attention to everyone at all times.

After this, we split up into 3 groups of Music (Voice), Movement and Production.

As part of the music group, we closed our eyes to listen to all the sounds we could ear around us. Β Some of those sounds were cars, the wind and birds tweeting.

After this, we went inside to warm up our voices. Β We used the piano to sings notes. Β This was fun an we learned how singers should stand and how the breathe properly when performing.

After working in our groups, we all came together to feedback what we had learned.

Our music group told everyone how to warm up our vocal chords and that we were trying to make the sounds of what we hear in nature.

The production group told us that they had been making videos and creating different scenes like eating in a canteen and being on a construction site. Β They told us they used different materials to make the sounds you would hear in this situation.

Lastly, the performance group showed us what they had been doing. Β We were amazed at the performance they had created in such a short space of time. Β This group worked together to tell a story through movement. Β This taught us that we don’t need words to tell a story.

At the end of the afternoon, we reflected on what we had done and some people shared what they had learned and what their favourite part was.

Well done everyone for another great session!

SOLE learning 🀩🀩

We have been working with Miss Kinloch on big questions related to maths. Β We have had to work in groups to problem solve and work out answers to big questions.

After watching a video of Primary 1s saying if they had older siblings or not in the school, we had to turn this information into fractions. Β We then had to compare this information with how many people in our P6 class have older siblings in the school. Β We didn’t have to do a survey of this because we all know it’s only Raeesah who has an older brother in P7.

After we had the information, we used the iPads to create ways to present the information. Β It was interesting that different groups used different ways to present their information like PowerPoint, iMovie and notes.

Zoha, Safa and Hiba covered their findings into fractions and decimals – WOW!!

Jazil’s group told us about their findings too.

Amna and Eliza showed their findings by drawing arrays which helped us understand the numbers as we could clearly see them drawn out. Β What a great way to show work.

Zain’s group used the Keynote app to create a PowerPoint of their findings.

Great work everybody πŸ₯³πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

Working with The Royal Conservatoire πŸŽ₯🎬

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!

On Tuesday, we had our first session working with The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
It was great to meet Lou, Cress and Adka, who all work there. Β They told us their job titles and what these meant.
We found out about what we will be doing with them over the next month and it sounds really exciting! Β Watch this space …

Lou had a really fun game for us where we had to match job titles to job descriptions. Β Miss McCue suggested we move around the room and find people who matched our job description. Β It was so much fun!

Our visitors, along with Miss McCue and Mr McCormack were very impressed by how well we understood the language of the job descriptions.

What a great first session and we’ve learned so much already about the different jobs within a theatre. Β Who knew that there were so many behind the scenes jobs that made the performance happened. Β Lou told us that it is so important that everybody works together at the theatre.

Termly Summary of Learning in Primary 6

Primary 6’s Learning in Term 3

Literacy –
Writing – We will be focusing on poetry this term in Literacy and look at the structure of different poems. We will read poetry by different poets and work to understand the meaning behind the poetry. Our topic this term is Scottish Geography and we will be continuing with our expressive writing pieces. We will learn Scots language and write in Scots too!

Reading – As there are lots of celebrations during Term 3 – Burns Day, Valentine’s Day etc, we will read a variety of texts about these celebrations. Reading strategies will be taught through these texts and assessed through close reading tasks. We have started our own book club which we participate in every Friday morning. We have split up into groups depending on which genre of book we are reading. Miss McCue has set this up to encourage children to read more at home. Please motivate your child to read as the benefits of reading for enjoyment are endless.

Talking and Listening – Since August, we have been working on growing more confident as a class as we know how important it is to have our voice heard, especially when we go onto further education and into the workplace. This term, we will continue to work on our presentation skills, making sure we are speaking clearly and with confidence.

Maths – We are learning about Fractions, decimals and percentages this term in maths. We will be working from the TeeJay scheme and our homework sheets are made up by Miss McCue, which assesses our learning in class. We will be assessed at the end of each topic. Our Mental Maths learning links with our fractions, decimals and percentages topic as we are focusing on place value. It is imperative for children to understand place value so as they can work with fractions, decimals and percentages. Every Tuesday morning, we doΒ outdoor learning. During this time, we take our maths learning outside and carry out activities which will consolidate our maths learning in class.

IDL – Our topic this term is Scottish Geography and we are looking at The Outer Hebrides, specifically at the Isle of Barra. We will be learning about the different areas on Barra, things to see on Barra and thing to do on Barra. Did you know that the airport on Barra is on the beach and the plane lands on the beach … how cool is that? We are also learning a song about Barra which has been posted on our blog a couple of weeks ago. Have fun learning this.

HWB – For our Health and Wellbeing learning this term, we are learning about internet safety. We are looking at different forms of social media, age restrictions for each of these social media sites and dangers of talking to strangers online. We are also continuing with our PATHS learning and this term we are focusing on feelings like anger and how to manage it.

Maths Outdoor Learning πŸ’―β„οΈ

For our outdoor learning this week, we focused on place value and played games in teams to test our knowledge of place value.

These games are fun and also help us consolidate our learning.

We used our fantastic new MUGA for our outdoor learning this week. Β It’s so spacious!

In teams, we had to complete the obstacle course which involved us running, doing star jumps, jumping over hurdles and jumping through hoops. Β It was exhausting!!
We had to roll the dice at the end and if we rolled the same number twice, we would go and collect that number of cones. Β This was a fun way to consolidate our mental maths knowledge. Β After this game, the rule was changed and we had to roll two even numbers to be able to go and collect the cones.

When all the cones had been collected, the teams had to work together to count up their points. Β For each game, the value of the cones changed so it was difficult to add up. Β Some cones were worth 75 points each!! Β There was an orange ball thrown in which was worth mega points so it was a race to see which team could collect that!!

Here’s a clip of Malaika rolling her dice …

Some of the rounds were so close …

We then played a fractions game with the dice. Β The first person would roll the two dice and have to identify which of the numbers was the numerator and which was the denominator. Β Then, the next person would roll the dice and do the same. Β We then had to work out who had the smallest fraction and this person won a point.
You could play this at home and make it more difficult by asking your child to find an equivalent fraction of the fraction they have rolled or to simplify the fraction.

This week’s homework :)

πŸ’œπŸ’œ HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAYΒ πŸ’œπŸ’œ

The feast day of St Valentine is celebrated on the 14th February every year. Β St Valentine was a priest from Roman times. Β He went to jail for helping people get married and he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and he cured her blindness through a miracle.

On this day, everybody celebrates love. Β People give flowers, cards and gifts to the people they love.

We learned about St Valentine during our RE time and then created a card for someone we love. Β On the card we included the person’s name and what we love about them. Β Some of us made a card for our mum, our dad, our grandparents, our friend and our teacher.

Mrs Ahmed helped us to create a love wall in our classroom. Β It is a sky with clouds and our slogan is

πŸ’“πŸ’“ β€˜Love is in the Air’ πŸ’“πŸ’“

Chinese New Year 🐷🐲

On Tuesday, we celebrated Chinese New Year. Β Every Chinese New Year, they have a new animal. Β This year it is the year of the pig.

We learned that Chinese New Year is often celebrated by a parade.
The colour red is important because it keeps the monster away. Β Chinese people also give money in a red envelope to other people as a gift.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, we designed and created our own Chinese lanterns.

The lanterns turned out fantastic. Β Have a look …
