K’nex Challenge

We loved taking part in the Glasgow Science Festival class K’nex challenge this afternoon. We had to build a bridge that could hold a small water bottle, was at least 19cm high and at least 30cm long. It also had to have an opening for a boat of any size to pass through.
We all agreed that this was a lot trickier than we first thought. Excellent communication, problem solving and designs were demonstrated.
Well done to our winners Hannah and Lily!

Barclays Workshop

P6b enjoyed a workshop hosted by Barclays on ‘value for money’ this morning. They learned the difference between income and expenditure and reflected on their own spending patterns by completing a personal budget.

Creativity!

It was fantastic to see the class explore our maths resources and use them to create games and group activities to practise a range of skills and challenge themselves.

Problem Solving

As well as completing our problem this week, we chose to challenge ourselves with different activities that we feel will help us with multiplication and word problems. Some of us wrote out our own problems for a partner to solve, some of us played games to practise times tables we find tricky, and some of us created games using the Numeracy Blueprint Boards.

Challenge Poverty Week

Today we discussed what it is like to have less than others and what we can do to support people living in poverty. We listened to a woman called Marie who often worries about money and the pressures this can have on her family. We all agreed that it is so important to treat everyone with kindness and not to brag about our possessions, as we can never be sure of the financial situations of others.

Maths Week Scotland

Today we started to celebrate Maths Week Scotland with some tricky problems and discussions around the ways we use maths in our daily lives.

Maths relay!

We raced against our peers to complete tricky maths word problems today! We had to work as a team to figure out the answers and show all working. A fun but challenging task!

Inspiration

A big thank you to Cleo from P7 who came in to talk to us about her journey with reading and writing. It was great to hear how reading has helped improve her writing skills. We loved listening to her read out some of her stories from P6 and this has inspired us to include as many adjectives and adverbs in our writing as we can!

Problem Solving

We explored strategies to solve tricky problem in maths, including acting out the situation and reasoning logically. It took a few attempts but we got there in the end. We learned that perseverance is key!
