Back to School!

I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday! P5a have been back working hard and starting new topics and projects!

Literacy:
Maya- In writing, we used prompts to create our own story and created our own success criteria based on the techniques we have learned before.
Murdo- We have started our class novel Matilda! We used our before reading skills to gather information from the title, pictures, blurb, and first pages.

Numeracy:
Ava- This week, the triangles were revising fractions!
Inaaya- The squares have been revising number work and converting weight and length.
Myra- The circles have also been revising number work, symmetry, angles and converting units of measure.

Expressive Arts:
Yi Chen- We are doing an artist study topic. We learnt about the life of Picasso, cubism and then created our own self-portraits in this style! I loved making the face have shapes and lots of colours.

Heath and Wellbeing:
Olivia- In PE we did athletics. We timed our pace for walking, jogging, running and sprinting and our teams had to try and get to the finish line in our times.
Matthew- We also started a friendship topic! We had a whole class debate about different statements on friendship. Then we looked at different scenarios and decided in our groups what the actions and consequences of a true friend and a fake friend would be.

Technology and Design: 
Kate- We have started a design project called The Change Challenge. Today, we had to brainstorm ideas in our chosen groups to create a new product designed to make the life of someone in our local or wider community easier. We had to present our design brief to the class. 

Outdoor Learning:
Lewis- We made toad holes using outdoor materials to finish off our RSPB Wild Challenge (Bronze) Award.

Week Beginning 21st March

The Triangles have been learning about fractions this week. We have been learning about the different parts of a fraction – the numerator and denominator. We have also been comparing fractions and deciding which ones are bigger or smaller.

Lewis

On Monday we did an information hunt during literacy. We had a text and we had to look for different information in the text, we had to skim the text quickly to try and find the information quickly.

Ace

When we went to Eastwood this week we got to play in a rounders competition. There were four teams called the Crunchy Croissants, Chicken Turkeys, Squidward Squad and the Crusty Crab. We had boundaries and we had to try and get as many home runs as we could, if you went outside the boundary you were eliminated. It was a lot of fun and the sun was shining.

Cormac

We created different habitats as part of our wild challenge award. We chose the animal we wanted to create a habitat for and thought about camouflage, safety, food sources and the animals comfort. P2 came to see what we had created and really enjoyed looking at the habitats and we enjoyed being able to teach the P2s about different habitats.

Sophie B

During Health & Wellbeing we were learning about smoking and alcohol. We had lots of discussions about the bad impact they can have on your health and whether they should be banned.

Ava

This Week…

Literacy:
Jamie MacK- In writing we wrote a persuasive letter. We up-levelled  from last week. We also did comprehension based on our reading books and practised the skill of summarising.

Numeracy:
Christopher- WE were learning about place value and we did problem solving about weight.
Yi Chen- We have continued dividing two digit numbers by 8 and 9 without using the tens and units (concrete materials).
Daisy- We have continued learning about compass points and directions. We then completed direction word problems.

Health and Wellbeing:
Morven- We participated in the cross country try outs and we continued PE at Eastwood. We also learned about the effects of alcohol on the body and we created life-size diagrams! It was so funny!!

Healthier Minds:
Murdo- We had visitors come in to class to do workshops with us about anxiety! We will do this once a week for six weeks now.

Outdoor Learning:
Ace- We went out to do beat the street using our mapping skills!

RME:
Myra- We used egg tempera like the olden ways of painting to recreate Christian artwork.

Science/Social Studies:
Cormac- We were learning about climate change and maps where it affects places the most. We also watched a live stream for British Science Week.

 

P5a’s Learning Week

Literacy:
Taylor- In writing, we were learning about persuasion and we created an email to whoever we wanted to persuade them about our own cause.
Daisy- We have been continuing to learn the skills before, during and after reading and we used this to help us answer questions about our reading books.

Numeracy:
Evie- The squares have been learning about data handling and creating bar charts. We were also learning how to convert kilograms and grams.
Ace- The circles have been learning about compass points, angles and turns to follow directions. We were also learning about weight.
Olivia- We have continued bus stop division (dividing two digit numbers) by 8 and 9. We also continued learning about the properties of 3D shapes.

Outdoor Learning:
David- We were learning how to tell the age of trees! We measured the circumference and used a calculator to divide it by 2.5 to find out how old they are.

RME:
Christopher- We learned the Easter story by looking at different religious artwork and working out what we could see and what they were doing. We also learned about how they made paint thousands of years ago with eggs and stones- which is why Jesus always had blue on because the blue pigment comes from a blue precious stone (Lapis Lazuli).

Social studies:
Myra- We were exploring the features of online maps and we identified the similarities and differences between online and paper maps! We then had a challenge to find places.

Health and Wellbeing:
Cormac- We have continued PE at Eastwood High to learn different sports from the 6th year leaders.
Sophie C- We were also learning about the effects of smoking on the body! We then labelled the body and what smoking does to these organs and we made a leaflet to warn people about it.

 

This Week in P5a…

Literacy:
Taylor- In writing we continued learning about flashbacks. This week, the flashback was about where a characters fear came from!
Myra- We used the chapter of our reading homework to answer comprehension questions.
Inaaya- We  have been learning about the reading skill of questioning. We did a question generator task based on our reading homework and we also made chatterboxes where we included different questions about Alice in Wonderland that a pair had to pick colours and answer.

Numeracy:
Olivia- We have been revising bus stop division. We were dividing 2 digit numbers by 2, 3, 4 and 5.  We also learned about 3D shapes by creating them ourselves and we went on a shape hunt around the school and took pictures on the iPod. Then,  we looked at the pictures on board  and labelled (vertices, edges and faces).
Maya- We continued learning about data handling. We used data from our surveys to create a bar chart! We also continued to estimate, measure and convert lengths outside in the playground and around the school using metre sticks and trundle wheels.
Cormac- We have been learning to identify different angles and we also learned about complementary and supplementary angles.

Outdoor Learning:
Daisy- As part of our RSPB award we created poems about the weather and we shared them with the class!

Health and Wellbeing:
Isam- We have continued our PE lessons at Eastwood High. Our groups have been learning how to play tennis, netball and football.

Social Studies:
Kerr- We did a mapping from memory activity in groups about the cities in the UK. We had to look at the board (facing away) and then run to our map to pin point and colour each city.

 

 

World Book Day:
David- We watched a stream where the author read a book to us called Battle Bunny. We then made a black out poem where we circled the words we wanted from a rabbit fact file and blocked out the rest with drawings to turn it in to a rabbit poem.
Then we had a party with snacks!!!

P5A’s Learning This Week

Literacy: 
Taylor- In writing we have been learning about flashbacks and we finished the story of a superhero flashback!
Sara- We have been practising the reading skill of visualisation where we listened to parts of our reading books and drew along to show our understanding through pictures!

Numeracy:
Yi Chen- We have continued practising multiplying by nine and we also multiplied two digit numbers by nine.
Matthew- We have been learning how to round and estimate.
Evie- We have been learning how to gather information! We created questions and used google forms to collect the answers.
Morven- We also learned about weight and measuring weight by baking fairy cakes!

Social Studies:
Kerr- We were drawing our own maps with symbols and grid references!

RME:
Isam- We have been learning about the key features of a synagogue and we did a virtual tour of real synagogues in New York!

Health and Wellbeing: 
Ava- We have continued our PE lessons with the 6th year pupils at Eastwood High. My group has been learning how to play netball!
Mariam- We have been learning about different types of substances such as medicine and legal substances. We learned the difference between prescription medicine and over the counter medicine and the laws of legal substances like caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes. We then did a Kahoot quiz to test our knowledge!

Outdoor Learning:
Due to the weather, outdoor learning was actually… indoor! But, the pupils learned how to make a bird feeder.
Ethan- We were given half an orange, two sticks, string and seeds and we brainstormed ways to make a bird feeder. We then were able to successfully hang them up outside!

Modern Languages:
Inaaya- It was also Mother’s Tongue Day where each class was given a country and we had to label places throughout the school using our chosen language. Our’s was Spanish- just like what we learn with Mr McMillan. We wore the Spanish colours, had a special lunch in the cafeteria and we also learned a Spanish song  and practised it for assembly!

This Week in P5a (updated)

Literacy:
Ethan- We have continued to answer various questions about a text and we also continued writing poetry.

Talking and Listening (Leading the Leading): 
Kerr- We all finished off our lesson this week, including me, where I did a lesson on NASA. I even made a power point!

Numeracy:
Harley- The circles have been revising rounding numbers and we also learned how to round and estimate!
Sophie C- We have continued to learn about multiples and factors and we also learned how to measure in cm and mm.
Ava- We have been learned how to multiply by 9!

RME: 
Lucas- We have continued learning about Judaism and today we learned about Jewish Artefacts.

Health and Wellbeing: 
Cormac- We have been really lucky as we are now going to Eastwood High School twice a week for PE! It is 6th year pupils who are leading the lessons and we do lots of fun activities like rugby, netball, tennis etc.

Social Studies: 
Christopher- We learned about grid references and how to use them on a map.

Outdoor Learning: 
Myra- We continued learning how to use a compass! We teamed up with P5B and worked together to follow directions and note down how to get to specific places. We then drew the base compass back in the classroom (it was very cold!!!!) and labelled the parts.

Feel At Home Friday: 
As you all probably know now, the children are allowed to bring in a pillow and blanket on a Friday as a cosy treat,and since it was in indoor break and lunch, they all decided to “have a sleepover” and then they built a blanket fort!

Remember to bring in your blanket and pillow on a Friday if you want to 🙂

Short Learning Week

Literacy:
Ace- We all read a text and answered different types of questions!

Numeracy:
Lewis- The triangles have been revising the 8x table.
Lucas- The circles continued learning about nets of 3D shapes.
Sophie- The squares were converting cm and metres and completing length problems.

RME:
Jack- We learned about Saint Valentine and we completed a Kahoot quiz about his story.

Expressive Arts:
Sophie B- We created heart pop art inspired by the artist Jim Dine!

Leading the Learning:
The pupils continued to deliver their lessons.
Inaaya- Me and Heena did a health and wellbeing lesson about friendships.
Olivia- Me, Evie and Taylor also did a health and wellbeing lesson teaching hiphop dance moves.

Health and Wellbeing:
Murdo- We continued Scottish dancing and practised the dos-a-does.

Outdoor Learning:
Harley- We continued learning how to use a compass. We picked two parts of the playground and gave coordinates of how to get there. We then tested each others out to see if they were correct.

The First Learning Week of February!

I hope you all have a lovely February break! You have all worked really hard so far in this new term so enjoy the long weekend to relax and have fun 🙂

Literacy:
Morven- In writing, our groups created a friendship poem!
Murdo- We finished our story from last week about the magic key that takes you in to the past or future. We focused on having a beginning, middle and end.
Inaaya- We have continued to answer different types of questions during comprehension.

Numeracy:
Kerr- We continued learning about the nets of 3D shapes. We did some problem solving where we had to draw nets and created nets using different materials. We also learned how to estimate weight.
Ava- We were multiplying two digit numbers by 8 and played lots of 8x games to practise. We also learned how to find fractions of numbers.
Christopher- We have been learning about factors and multiples! We also revised converting measure through length problem solving.

Social Studies:
Harley- In mapping, we learned about contours; keys and symbols. We then created a 3D model showing the contour lines.

Talking and Listening (Leading the Learning):
Cormac- We have began delivering our planned lessons to to the whole class or in small groups! I worked with Jack and we taught a group some guitar chords.
Ava- I taught a group how to draw a llama, my favourite animal, step by step!
Daisy- I worked with Sophie and we taught a group how to draw 3 different cartoons of their favourite characters or animals.
Matthew- Me, Jamie McK and Harley taught a whole class PE lesson. We then did a cooling down mindfulness exercise afterwards just like what Miss MacMillan does when we do indoor PE!

Outdoor Learning:
Sophie C- We have been learning how to use a compass! We were then given a direction outside and we had to work out which way to face.

Music:
Myra- We have continued using Music Chrome lab and today we created our own song and wrote lyrics to match! We then performed the song to the class if we wanted to share it.

Health and Wellbeing:
Evie- We practiced the canadian barn dance and then we learned the dos-a-does. We did this dance to the song Cotton Eyed Joe- it was really fun but we were so tired afterwards!!

P5A’s Learning This Week

Apologies parents and carers for not posting last week as I (Miss MacMillan) was absent due to COVID! So glad to be back with P5a I really missed them when I was isolating.

Literacy: 
Inaaya- We have been learning how to answer various questions in comprehension.
Christopher- In writing we have been learning how to add direct speech. We continued a story and had different objects to help us form ideas.

Numeracy:
Matthew- The circles have been learning about the nets that make up 3D shapes.
Jamie F- The squares have been learning about factors and product. We also did problem solving about measure.
Murdo- The triangles have been learning how to multiply by 8 and we also learned about grid references.

Health and Wellbeing: 
Kerr- We had a visitor (virtually) to discuss things we are proud of and things we are good at. He had an inspiring story about growing up small and being bullied.
Maya- We have practised Scottish ceilidh dances like the Gay Gordons and Canadian Barn Dance.
Daisy- We had an visitor from the Young Carers Support team who taught us about the role of a young carer and how we can get help and support if this affects us.

Talking and Listening:
Sophie B- We have been practising our lessons that we will teach next week. I have been practising an art lesson to teach a small group!

Music:
Sophie C- We used music chrome lab to recreate a nursery rhyme! Then we made up our own nursery rhyme with our own lyrics too.
