World Book Week 2022

We have had such a fabulous week exploring so many stories! We even got to attend assembly in the hall for the first time ever.

Our writing task this week was to imagine that we stepped into our favourite story.

Outdoors, we acted out the story of the Gruffalo in small groups. Each child decided which role they would like to play and then we chose a director to tell us where to go and help us with what to say.

We have enjoyed story yoga in class along to The Gruffalo and The Very Hungry Caterpillar stories.

We completed a Story Book Scavenger Hunt (some of us finished really quickly – next time we won’t be allowed to use the You Choose book!)

We now have Play Jotters to use in class and we have been writing and drawing in them this week.

We have been reading our school reading books and our favourite stories in lots of random places all around our classroom!

We brought our teddies to school and we read to them.

And the P1 teachers got to dress up!

Thank you so much to everyone who sent in their photos of book scenes – here is the P1 team one – we had far to much fun staging this – can you work out what our favourite book is?

Have a great weekend!

Winter Fun in Primary One

We’ve managed to get outdoors this week despite the weather and used the snow and the rain for so many learning opportunities.

For months now, we have been dodging the puddle at the gate and we noticed when we were outdoors on Wednesday, that there was a river running down the playground towards our gate, so we went to investigate the source of the water.

We found that the water starts to flow down right round at the back of the building next to the P6 doors.

After some water was poured out of a bucket in our garden area, some of the children followed it to see where it would go, and realised that it was easier to spot the water flow as it had some sand mixed into it from the bucket and you could see the sand moving towards the drains.

The children were curious to discover whether the water all went down the drain or it some of it would go all the way round the path and down the front of the school. So, we got some glitter and the watering can and repeated our experiment. This time we could really clearly see where the water was going.

As you will have seen from Twitter, we “cheated” a wee tiny bit in the school snowman competition as some of the P7’s offered to help us and it would have been rude to refuse! We named our snowman Jack Frosty

We even made a little Frosty and sneaked him back into the classroom, there was still a little bit of him left at the end of the day.

In Maths this week, Miss Bishop has been teaching us about weight and we have continued to learn about money and to extend our number knowledge.

In Literacy and English this week, we have continued to consolidate our digraph learning, worked on our Common Words and this week we wrote a story in three parts.

It has been International Mother Tongue Language week and Primary One were tasked with learning British Sign Language – check out our signing and singing over on our Google Classroom.

Here are a few more photos of this week’s learning.

We didn’t notice that we had our own Elsa and Anna in our class until we were looking at the photos from Thursday and came across this one!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and look forward to our Parent Teacher meetings next week.

Valentine’s, Bubbles and Ninjas.

We’ve had a week full of love and laughter in P1a. On Monday we celebrated St Valentine’s day, I hope you all liked the special pictures that the children made to bring home.

In literacy, we continue to develop our reading skills through experiencing a range of written and on screen texts.

Our writing task this week was to imagine we were flying in a bubble like the girl in the story – the children chose such a vast range of places that they would like to visit. Our new wall display has sparked lots of conversations as they were able to see one another’s work and share their ideas with their classmates.

In Maths, we have been investigating measurement with Miss Bishop.  Our number skills are really developing too, this week we had to apply our knowledge of addition and subtraction to our work with money.

We kicked off our new Ninja Topic with a bit of Kung Fu fighting! (in a safe and controlled way obviously)

And we have been talking about the attributes necessary to be a Ninja.

We even brought our Ninja skills into our literacy lessons with a fabulous demonstration of Kung Fu Punctuation!

Here are some more pictures of this week’s classroom shenanigans!

We’ve been keeping a really close eye on the weather this week too – we love have our big picture windows!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and we are all back in school on Monday for another fantastic week of learning.

Dragons, patterns and lots of weekend news.

This is a bumper edition of the blog this week as we enjoyed our holiday weekend last week.

In maths we were investigating patterns and now we have returned to learning about money.

We have been making good use of the Blueprint Boards to help us learn about ordering numbers using Hundred Squares and Number Lines.

In Literacy, we have been writing about the Chinese New Year and about what we did at the weekend.

This week, we enjoyed our time outdoors – the Ninja game continues and has now developed into our next class topic!

The children were still using their learning about Chinese New Year this week, when they created a dragon.

Here are a few more pictures of our classroom activities from the last two weeks.

Finally, I had to share this picture of today’s structure in our construction area – the added detail and the pupil storytelling  is a prime example of Play Based Learning at it absolute best.

Scots tales and Gingerbread Fun in Primary 1a.

We started this week celebrating Burns’ Night by reading the Neeps and Tatties story and acting it out. The book is written in Scots and so we had to research some of the words that we did not understand and then we acted out part of the story and some of our new words to help us remember them.

In literacy this week, we continue to develop our knowledge of single sounds and digraphs. As our reading books become more challenging, we are able to complete more literacy tasks using them.

In Maths this week, we have been learning to create, continue and record more complex patterns.

Our story of the week was The Gingerbread Man, all week we have been recreating the story in lots of different ways and today we baked and decorated our own Gingerbread Men – the classroom smelled amazing!

We have managed to pack so much learning in this week, I think everyone is ready for the weekend!

Tartan, Rapunzel, Puppets and Ninjas!

Another busy week in Primary One. We have been learning about Tartan and working on our weaving skills. We investigated different tartans that match some of our surnames and then we created our very own P1a Rainbow Tartan – we are very proud of how it turned out!

In ICT this week, Miss Bishop showed up how to safely log on and off using the crome books. The we had a series of tasks to complete which helped develop our mouse pad skills.

In literacy we continue to practise our digraph sounds and the story of the week was Rapunzel. We read different versions of the story and investigated the differences – we liked the modern version where Rapunzel learned lots of different skills in the tower and then went to live in the castle to help her friend the prince (after she restored his eyesight). She even brought the wicked witch with her to work in the castle garden. We wrote our own story maps and one of the children even created a set of puppets which will now enhance the library puppet theatre.

In Maths we continue to develop our numeracy skills using practical activities.

We have been learning to dance using streamers

And in PE we have been developing our striking and fielding skills.

Our Ninja stories continue to develop, this week they made it into the classroom!

Here are a few more photos of our learning for you to enjoy!

I hope everyone has a great weekend – look forward to hearing all about it next week.

Pigs, Birds and Ninjas

This term in P1A we will have a focus on traditional tales and we started this week looking at the story of The Three Little Pigs.

We have read different versions of the story, watched a  version of the story in French and this week’s writing task was to create a story journey.

Our Growth Mindset Lesson this week focused on team work and overcoming challenge.

In maths this week, we continued our learning about shapes and developed our numeracy skills using a range of learning supports.

In preparation for the RSPB Big Bird Watch at the end of January, we have been learning about the garden birds that can be found in our area. We learned what the birds like to eat, how to feed them and in art, we have created bird table pictures.

Outdoors, we have been developing out Gross Motor Skills, climbing and building – we’ve also been developing our story writing skills with a very complicated Ninja warrior game!

Here are a few more pictures of our learning this week.

I hope everyone has great weekend and look forward to another fabulous week of learning.

Snow, Shapes and the Salon!

Welcome back to our new term! I hope everyone had a fantastic break.

This week we have been enjoying being back with our friends and we had great fun investigating the snow.

In Literacy & English we have been recapping our sounds from last term, using them in a range of activities.

Our Growth Mindset lesson this week was all about persevering when we find something tricky, and sharing our skills.  There was lots of sharing of ideas.

In maths this week, we have been learning about the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. We have been dharing our knowledge of 3D shapes in the construction area.  We even managed to find some 3D shapes outdoors.

Here are more pictures of our learning this week.

Finally, I leave you with this lovely shot from our Role Play area, where hair was being pleated and straightened expertly, they even remembered to wear hairdressing gowns!

Nativity, Santa and the missing star

What a week it has been in Primary 1.

On Monday we were so happy to present our Nativity to all of our special guests. I think everyone felt a bit nervous at the start, but all enjoyed the performance and the children were all so proud of themselves afterwards.

We were so fortunate to be able to perform in Mearns Baptist Church – they are so much better and sound and lighting than I am!

Miss Robertson has come to the end of her placement with us, we really appreciated all of her help, especially with our Christmas crafts.

Today we had so much fun at our Christmas party – check out our fabulous dance moves!

We even had time for some delicious party food and then we had a visit from Santa!

Here a few more pictures of our learning from this week.

Finally, after much chat about the fact that the school Christmas Tree was not topped with a star, we took matters into our own hands and sorted it!

Joyeux Noelle!

This week we have been so lucky to have our student teacher Miss Robertson with us. Today she taught us all about how children in France celebrate Christmas. The children have enjoyed sharing their learning with her and showing her around our school.

In maths this week, we have been focusing on number. We had a washing line to help with addition and subtraction and lots of different number line activities.

Our new sound in literacy this week were qu, ou and oi and although we will not be bringing a new book home for homework, we continue to develop our reading skills in class using our Storyworld Books.

We are so lucky to have Miss Bishop to teach us about technology – this week we were programming the sphero robots.

We have been working  hard on our nativity and it was lovely to see that the children are so familiar with the Christmas Story that they created a nativity scene using the metal loose parts.

Our elf is still up to lots of mischief in our classroom!

Here are a few more pictures of this week’s learning.

I hope everyone has a great weekend – we are so excited to perform our Nativity next week. However, please pay close attention to the Parent’s Round Ups and any further information from Mrs McGuigan in case there are any changes to arrangements for Monday.
