Park Life!

This week we had our trip to the park and the children all made me so proud with their excellent behaviour.

We enjoyed ice creams by the pond, followed a photo trail around the park (avoiding the scary swans), had a picnic lunch and then played in the playpark.  It was so nice to see the three classes playing together so well.

Our Class Story this week has been Aliens Love Underpants and the children have been designing their own underwear in the creative area.

In Maths this week we have had mini teachers quizzing us on our double numbers and have been learning about bar modelling to help with number bonds to 20.

Here are some more pictures of this week’s fun.

Sport’s Week

What an exciting week of sports we have had!

T                                                      Thank you to everyone who managed along to support us at Sport’s Day

This week we have tried Hockey

Gymnastics

Orienteering

Dancing (there are also videos of the dancing on the Google Classroom) – we were all so impressed with how quickly the children picked up some really tricky choreography

We also tried Boccia, Judo and Taikwondo.

Then today, we had a fabulous time competing in the whole school Sport’s Day

And these little stars did a fantastic job running for the House Awards.

It has been a fabulous and exhausting week – a huge thank you to Mr McMillan and our very own Miss Regan for organising all of this week’s sporting events.

A wee reminder, next Tuesday (14th) we are off to the park for our P1 trip – can everyone please remember to pack waterproofs even if the weather looks lovely in the morning just in case we get caught in the rain as there’s no such thing as bad weather as long as we all have appropriate clothes.

Mars Rover, Saturn and Subtraction

This week in P1a we have been continuing our Space Topic learning. Our writing task this week was to complete a fact file page about the planet Saturn and following on from last week’s learning about Mars, we used the metal loose parts to design our own Mar’s Rovers. We displayed them on our red carpet because it looks just like the surface of Mars.

In Literacy, we continue to investigate Non Fiction texts and we have discovered lots of new facts about animal skeletons and eyes. We have also been working hard to consolidate our phonics using our single sounds, blends and digraphs in a variety of different activities.

In Maths our number focus has been subtraction and we have been working on our number bonds in our mental maths activities.

Miss Bishop has been teaching us about different materials.

And Mrs Grieve has been teaching us how to safely use knives when we are preparing food.

What started as a simple building of a park, has turned into Jurassic World

It has been so lovely to see the construction developing as the week has gone on. The children have taken their learning forward by adding additional creatures and signage – they even added a gift shop!

Here are some more photos of this week’s learning.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Adventures on the Activity Trail

This wee in literacy, we have been revising our digraphs and Common Words and we have been reading non fiction texts.

In Numeracy we have been working on our subtraction skills and our mental maths. Our measuring skills came in very useful when we planted the bean plants outdoors – we had to work out how many to a row, how far apart to space them and we compared the heights of them all.

We worked really hard to fix the area of the garden where some compost had been left out in the rain – we got a bit muddy, but were proud to be responsible citizens!

This week in our Space Topic we were learning about the planet Mars, we wrote our fact files and we challenged one another to a sort the planets into order race – it got very competitive, but we had our inflatable solar system to use as a handy reference.

In the Creative Area we have been working with paint and clay this week.

And finally, we found a break in the weather today and went down to the Activity Trail for “The best PE lesson ever!”.

Have a great weekend.

Ramadan and Rockets

This week we have been learning all about Ramadan and celebrating Eid. Our classmates who celebrate Eid told us about their family celebrations and we made Eid lanterns.

It was tricky to get the shape of the lanterns right, but we all persevered.

We named our class rocket Flash and set up Mission Control.

Our writing task this week was all about the planet Jupiter and we have been learning how rockets take off and land. We designed our own rockets for our Space display.

Here are some more photos from this week’s learning.

Sunshine, Space and Solar System adventures.

We have had such a great week, making the most of the nicer weather. In PE we have been working on our throwing and catching skills.

Our Space Topic has been at the centre of so many learning opportunities this week. We have been creating a Space Fact File in our writing lesson and we’ve watched stories from the International Space Station, built a rocket to play in (we even made Space Helmets for the astronauts and we completed a STEM challenge to build rockets out of our construction toys.

We travelled to Outer Space for our story yoga

We drew Solar Systems in the creative area

And we learned about Nebulae and created our own in the sensory tank.

Here are more photos of our learning this week.

Finally – who do you think should win our Rocket Challenge?

Have a fabulous long weekend, can’t wait to hear all about it on Tuesday.

Earth Day, Abstract Art and the best dressed dolls in P1!

Welcome to our first blog post of our final term in Primary One. Today we celebrated Earth Day with a special assembly and we spread our BBC Green Planet seed bombs in the woodland area – we will watch closely to see if our wildflowers grow.

In Art this week we have been learning about Abstract art and the artist Jackson Pollock. It was so interesting to look at the same piece of art and discover that we could all see different things, ranging from a deer to a bonfire and to faces.

We created our own Jackson Pollock inspired art work – outdoors (it was very messy)

And then we displayed it in the classroom. On the wall, we could see so many different things in each of the pictures.

Here are some more pictures of this week’s learning. As always, the construction areas have been very busy.

As has the House Corner

Mrs Dougall’s mum has been very busy knitting new outfits for our dolls!

We are all so happy to be back in class with our friends again.

I hope the weather holds out and everyone has a great weekend – can’t wait to hear everyone’s news on Monday.

Happy Easter!

And just like that, another term in Primary One is over! This week, we have been learning all about the Easter Story and using our Ninja Skills to try and predict the weather – which has been so tricky!

In Maths we have been learning about Place Value.

In Literacy we have been consolidating out Word Boundary knowledge.

If you look over on our Google Classroom, you will be able to see our fantastic Stop Motion Films that we created with the help of Miss Bishop.

We have been looking really closely at the Daffodils in our creative area and painting still life pictures.

Outdoors, we planted beans (we hope they are magic!) and we tidied up the outdoors planting area so that we can grow lots of interesting things next term.

Here are a few more pictures of this week’s learning.

I hope everyone has a fabulous Spring Break and look forward to hearing everyone’s stories when we get back.

Spring Sunshine and Super Snappers!

We’ve really been making the most of the fabulous weather this week. In PE we have been practising our ball skills and developing out fitness levels.

In Maths we have been consolidating our number knowledge and practising adding and subtracting on a number line.

We started off in class

And then took our learning outdoors

We have been further developing our storywriting skills through our Helicopter Stories.

And in our play

Here are a few more pictures of our literacy learning

This week, Miss Bishop was teaching us about taking photographs, she taught us how to frame our shots and then we  took photos of anything we thought looked interesting outdoors.

I hope the weather holds over the weekend and everyone is able to get out and enjoy the Spring sunshine.
