The X Factor – Emily Middlemas – P6 & P7

As probably most of our children know, Emily Middlemas is a contestant from Scotland who is currently a contender on ‘The X Factor 2016.’ What they probably don’t know, is that she is a former pupil of Woodfarm Secondary School.
If Emily is lucky enough to get through to the next round this weekend, the X Factor Bus will be visiting Woodfarm Secondary on Tuesday 6th December at 9.45am.
We, at our Lady of the Missions Primary, all hope that she succeeds and will lend our support by taking our Primary 6 and Primary 7 children to the top of the road to cheer the bus arriving.
We wish Emily every success for the future no matter the outcome at the weekend.

St Joseph’s Parish Travelling Nativity – Something new for the children this Christmas?

As Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem they relied on the kindness of friends, family and strangers. Could your family give them shelter for a night this Advent? You would receive figures of Mary, Joseph and the donkey into your home from another family in the parish one evening in Advent. The visiting family lead a (very) short child friendly liturgy and you as the host family provide light refreshments. The following evening you travel with the figures to another home in the Parish and repeat. In this way the figures of Mary and Joseph will travel through around 20 homes in our parish community on their way to the Church on Christmas Eve. Full instructions on what to do and where to go will be provided. We anticipate the liturgy and refreshments lasting no more than 1 hour on each evening. This is a wonderful and practical way to help your children really think about the journey of Advent. If you might be interested in taking part, please contact Catriona James by email to parentsinprayer@stjosephs.co for an information sheet.

Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge

Our Young Person Services are urging people across East Renfrewshire to challenge themselves as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Diamond Challenge.

They are holding this special 60th anniversary event to help raise funds to transform lives of disadvantaged young people across the UK.

As part of the 60-inspired challenges, locals can choose to join a team of 60 people in a relay to cycle, run, swim and walk 60 miles, or pick a challenge more personal to you.

They are looking for 300 people to join in and make East Renfrewshire’s challenge the biggest one in Britain.

People of all ages and abilities can get involved and for those who don’t want to take part in a physical activity there is the opportunity to bake, learn an instrument, hula-hoop, sing or do yoga.

The East Ren Diamond Challenge event takes place on Friday 25 November 2016 from 3-7pm at Eastwood High School, Newton Mearns, G77 6NQ.

For more information and to sign up for the event, go to the Duke of Edinburgh website. If you are coming along to participate on the day please email Paul.Tulloch@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and he will send you a time slot and more information.Sign up for Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge

Light up the life of one child for one special day.

Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas aims to support children throughout our communities suffering from financial hardship, or living in poverty, by providing Shoebox Gifts or Christmas Gift Bags filled with presents and treats, to children who would not otherwise receive any gifts or very much this Christmas.

Help us include every child at Christmas and give them a magical experience and cherished memories to last a lifetime.

Through Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas, Our Lady of the Missions has been paired with Renfrewshire Women’s Aid to provide all the gifts they need for the children they support.

A number of parents have already pledged their support but there are still plenty more children needing our help.  I would like all the children to receive a gift package or shoe box containing a ‘big’ gift worth around £10 – £15 plus 4 or 5 smaller stocking type items: selection box, colouring book, ball, gloves, hat, toiletries for example.  You can either donate a new item, from a sweet treat to a toy, or a whole package containing several items.  All donations will be much appreciated.

Walk to school in partnership with Living Streets Scotland

Our Lady of the Missions Primary School is encouraging pupils and parents to walk to school in partnership with Living Streets Scotland (https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/). Pupils who walk to school at least twice a week are rewarded with a monthly badge, helping build healthy habits for a lifetime. Daily journeys are logged by pupils on our interactive Travel Tracker. For November and December, we would like you to join us and thousands of pupils across the country to make walking the natural choice and part of every child’s daily routine. We are aiming to reduce congestion and improve safety at the school gate as well as creating better local air quality and reduce CO2 emissions.
