Preparing for School

Nursery to primary school

Following confirmation of a place for their child in primary 1, all parents are invited to an induction day where they will be given details of expectations and procedures for starting school. In the weeks following this, pupils will be invited to school to visit their classroom and meet their new teacher.

In May/June, staff from Our Lady of the Missions visit local nurseries to introduce themselves to the children and gather important information to support their transition to primary school.

Primary to secondary

Our Lady of the Missions Primary has a close working relationship with Saint Ninian’s High School. Pupils have regular opportunities to visit the high school and work with the pupils and staff throughout their time at primary school. St. Ninian’s pupils and staff also come to our school regularly to offer specialist support across the curriculum, for example: PE, Science, Computing and Maths.

In Primary 7, all pupils participate in a four week transition programme where they have the opportunity to gain some experience of high school. During this time, they visit a number of classes across the school and take part in a range of practical subjects. This is an extremely beneficial experience for all as it allows the pupils to become familiar with the layout of the school and the various rules and routines. Furthermore, events such as the cluster ceilidh, provide opportunities for P7 pupils from all of the cluster primary schools to come together and get to know one another.
