Across the United Kingdom

By clicking on the icon above you will be taken to the main LGBT+ History Month, Schools Out UK organisation in the UK, which has resources for parents, teachers and young people to access.

Founded in 1994 by a Missouri high school teacher, Rodney Wilson, LGBTQ+ History Month has evolved into a month-long celebration observed in Hungary, the UK, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Greenland and Berlin.

The aim of Schools Out UK is to increase visibility of the entire LGBTQ+ community, as well as their history, lives and experiences.   It was founded by professor emeritus Sue Sanders of the Harvey Milk Institute and activist and educator Paul Patrick; they work with schools and other educational institutions – providing resources and training to help make them safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people, as well as raising awareness of issues that affect the community.

The month of February was chosen as LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28 across the UK (this was previously repealed in Scotland in June 2000), which stated that local authorities were not allowed to “intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality”.

In Scotland

In Scotland LGBT Youth Scotland   lead the development of LGBTQ+ History month.

During February, LGBTQ+ HM is not a purely reflective project. LGBT Youth Scotland  hope that February presents the opportunity to put contemporary activists in the spotlight, too.
They encourage participating organisations to pass the microphone to stakeholders, colleagues and friends with something to say about the future of LGBTQ+ activism, culture and representation.
