Rainbow Calendar of Events

Mearns Castle High School has been playing its part in acknowledging national and international days of celebration and remembrance.

The events listed below will become regular features every session.

Every year on 1st December, we will celebrate, support and remember those who have lost their lives, are living with or are supporting friends, family and loved ones who have contracted HIV and or developed AIDS.

The icon above takes you to  the World AIDS Day website organised by National AIDS Trust (NAT).

Since December 2017 we have chosen to support Scotland’s leading HIV and Hep C Charity during the week that surrounds the 1st December.

We sell red tartan ribbons around the school and encourage young people, staff and visitors to our school to support our fundraising efforts o support Waverley Care.

The link above take you to the Australian IDAHoBiT website, but is well known as the go to website for ideas and projects to help organisations support IDAHoBiT.

This session the young people and staff created five slides to raise awareness of the challenges still faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

LGBT History Month happens during the month of February every year.

We have celebrated this event since 2017 and below is a link to a movie show of the icons chosen by the young people and staff who meet every Friday with Pride! LGBTQ+ and Allies group.

For the first time this year, Mearns Castle High School participated in the international event that marks the end of LGBT History Month.

Purple Friday is the last Friday of February and is recognised around the world where individuals and organisations are encouraged to wear purple clothes to show their support as members of the LGBTQ+ community and allied of the community.

We encouraged young people and staff to buy a Purple Friday Badge and wear it with pride to show that they support friends, family and colleagues who identify as being members of the LGBTQ+ community.

We raised nearly £50.00 through the sale of the badges (around 100 badges) and Pride! LGBTQ+ and Allies group agreed that the money should be donated to   Scottish Trans to support the work that they are doing to further the rights and freedoms for members of the trans community.

We will sell Purple Friday badges again and hope that even more members of our school community and visitors to our school will purchase a badge and wear it to show support for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.

For the first time this year, we will be celebrating and supporting members of our school community who recognise as being bisexual.

Every year on 23rd September since 1999, Bi Visibility Day has been marked each year to highlight biphobia and to help people find the bisexual community.

We will be raising the Bi Flag alongside our permanent Rainbow Flag outside the school’s main entrance to show our continued support  for the bisexual community and to be visibility showing that we are a fully inclusive secondary school.

As well as raising the Bi Flag, we will also be displaying posters  and displaying the slides below to show why it is important to support and recognise bisexuality as an individual part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Trans Remembrance Day takes place every year on 20th November and this year Mearns Castle High School will play its part in honouring the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

During the week of 18-22 November we will be hosting five lunchtime events:

and started living her truth.
Today he is coming home to surprise her.
Parental love is unconditional.
It transcends a person’s memory of their child.
The Real Thing is an infinitely stronger bond.”

of friendship and hope, love and loss, strength and pride.

Similar to Bi Visibility Day, we will also be raising the Trans Flag to visibly show our support for members of the Trans community, to show that Mearns Castle High School is a fully inclusive secondary school and to show honour to those who have lost their lives.

Early in the morning of 28th June 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that had become the staple of New York City’s underground gay community. But this time, tired of the ongoing raids, community members fought back, striking what would become known as The Stonewall Riots.

As part of the celebrations taking place around the world this year (2019) and with World Pride taking place in New York City, Mearns Castle High School created a foyer display to show some of the events that happened before, during and after the Stonewall uprising.

Click here to be taken to our Twitter feed showing the posters in the entrance foyer.
