School Transitions

Transitions

The transition process for children heading off to school in August is well underway.

By now, children have all visited their feeder school on at least one occasion and for some children more visits are in the diary.

We have children going to Isobel Mair School, Crookfur Primary, St Cadoc’s Primary, Kirkhill Primary and Mearns Primary this year.

Teachers from some of the schools have dropped in to the Family Centre to say hello and spend a little time with the children.

If you have any queries about transitions to school, please ask Gary.

Registering Your Child for Primary School

East Renfrewshire Council has set up one week when you should register your son or daughter at your local primary school for school education in East Renfrewshire. You must register at your catchment school, even if you intend to make a placing request to another school or to defer your place and keep your son or daughter at home for another year.

If you intend to educate your child privately or at home you should still register at your local catchment school.

You may choose to enrol your son or daughter in either the local denominational or local non denominational school. This choice will determine the secondary school to which your child will transfer.

If he or she is aged five between 1 March 2016 and the end of February 2017 you should go along to the primary school between 1.45 and 3.30 any day during the week of Monday 11 January to Friday 15 January 2016.

You should bring your son or daughter’s birth certificate, your child benefit statement, a copy of your current council tax notice and mortgage statement or rental agreement. The school can also accept a driving licence, utility bill or bank statement if you are no longer in receipt of child benefit.

Placing Requests

Most school children attend their local primary or secondary school, but parents can choose to apply for a place for their son or daughter in another school.

If you are interested in making a placing request for a school in East Renfrewshire and want to find out more, visit the council website at www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/placingrequest where you can download a placing request form and information on the criteria used for prioritising placing requests where there are more requests received than places available. If you require any advice regarding making a placing request please contact Ann Nairn on 0141 577 3578.

If you are interested in finding out specific information about a particular school you should contact the school directly or visit the East Renfrewshire Council website at www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/schoolhandbook. If you want to make a placing request for your son or daughter for the school session beginning in August 2016 you should return your completed placing request form to Ann Nairn any time from 1 December 2015 and before 31 January 2016 by post to:

Registering your child at nursery

All children who are three and four years old are entitled to a free nursery place in East Renfrewshire and all other local authorities.

The place is either five mornings or five afternoons.

Morning and afternoon sessions are allocated by ballot and this allocation is made for two years. Morning and afternoon sessions are allocated in equal numbers to achieve a balance of pre-school and ante-pre school children.

You are encouraged to register your child for a place in a local authority establishment when they reach their second birthday.

You should apply now if your child will turn three or four years old between 1 March 2014 and 28 February 2015.

When your application is received, your child’s details will be held on file until places are allocated. For children who will be due to start nursery in session 2014/15, you will be informed about your child’s place by April 2014 provided the application is received no later than 28 February 2014. Please note, applications received after this date will be treated as being late and therefore your place will be allocated at a later date.

Full information on how to apply and application forms are available by calling 0141 577 3288 or you can e-mail pre.five@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk

If you plan to send your son or daughter to a partner nursery, you will need to apply for a place in your chosen nursery by contacting them directly no later than 31 August 2014.
